Angry Another freakin' Volant Modification!

If you do a search with Volant and Odin's Wrath you'll see the the history of my Volant intake. Here's the next installment.

Mod cost: $1.01 (1-3 in. PVC connector-Black)

As I've mentioned before, this system was designed for the 80mm MAF. I was given bad info before I purchased; but, I decided to make it work if I could.

This is the problem area I'm "fixing" with this modification:

As you can see, the intake duct is smaller than the 90mm MAF. I have replaced the Volant intake duct with the stock piece. The stock intake duct is too short to be a direct replacement; so, I ported out a 3 in. PVC connector to over 90mm and used it to close the gap.

Where the MAF connects to the airbox, the hole was also smaller than 90mm; so, I ported that out , also. Now I have a less restrictive flow path from the box to the throttle body. I also had to relocate the air temp. sensor to the Volant airbox. Everything seems to be working well. I have noticed a change in the exhaust note with this change and expect a performance gain.

I also added an Accufab throttle body to the mix. Throttle response and idle smoothness were improved. Acceleration seems more brisk, also. No detonation. Pictures follow.

Roger

Here is the next problem to be fixed:

The cone filter inside the box extends nearly to where it narrows. The filter is capped with a plastic disc on the end, and the only air the kit receives, is what is able to go around the edges of the cap. I am going to try and find a replacement filter from S&B. A Power Stack; so that I can flow more outside air into the box and cut down on the posibility of evacuation. Maybe I'll then be able to close off some of the holes in the box in favor of cooler outside air.

When you install the rest of your Bassani, you can talk smack about the engine compartment of my truck. Until then.........

Seems like a lot of money spent, just to refab parts and discard the solid tube that should have been the reason to buy the Volant in the first place.Hell, what it boils down to is that you spent all that green just for a filter cover that your not even happy with! They should have tooled up for the larger mass air if you asked me.

I knew I was gonna catch it from you, even before I posted the pics. It's hard to keep the engine bay clean, when you park on a dirt lot with semis driving through all day. LOL

Absolutely correct. That's why I am posting about it. Hopefully no one else will be so stupid as to throw their money away afer reading the saga of Odin's Volant.

After modifying it and still not being happy, it's a little too late for a refund. I'll just see if I can get some use out of it instead. It should be a one of a kind.

It still eludes me as to why they didn't design it for the '01-'02 applications. All models could have used it then. A Power Stack filter from the start was needed, also.

After some thought, I don't think the kit is a good choice for even the '99-'00 Ls. The cone filter they chose to use is still a restriction, even if everything else was designed correctly.

Odin, they did look promising at the beginning.I was thinking about getting one until you showed me the problems with yours. You may want to swap someone with a 99/00 before you modify it.It would be a good setup on a truck that it was designed for.

It's already modified. Except for the inlet duct. That is the part that would do a '99-'00 the most good anyway. I'm going to dyno this thing and see where I am before I decide to scrap it though. The inlet duct is up for grabs I guess. It's never going back on.

I've got the ram air part of the kit still installed. The filter kit was a PSP unit. I sold that to a buddy about three weeks ago. No looking back.
