i know of a few people on here using them that live in california. according to JDM they are 50 state legal. I know that my local exhaust shop says that they are not legal no matter what. but if i had the money i would buy them. legal or not.

They replace the first set of cats. There is no way that is legal in CA. It is illegal to remove any working catalytic converter period. It can mean a $10,000 fine and/or 6 mos. in jail if caught. I have only seen this enforced on shops not individuals. Besides, they must have an EO certification to be installed on 1973 and newer vehicle.

Here's the catch, part 1. It would probably pass the smog dyno test (IM240). However, the visual test is another matter. I have heard of some smog shops passing the vehicle if it passes the dyno test. That is, even after it fails the visual one. Finding one
of those is a matter of asking before testing.

Here's the catch, part 2. If you get caught in the visual test, and they fail you on that alone, you have become a marked man. There is no longer a $ limit to the work needed to bring it back into legal status. You will have to do that, and then take it to a referee staton for recertification. You will get no break there.

jail time for exhaust? are you sure? maybe i could see that happening for the shop that did the work but definetly not the consumer. you did say that youve only seen it enforced on a shop but are you sure that the cops could even do that if they wanted to an individual? just seems like a little much for exhaust. i know many people that have been caught with illegal exhaust and all they got was a $50 ticket and a court order to have it fixed.

Long Tubes

I believe that you can change the cats if you have over 50,000 miles on the truck. Also if you don't have that EO tag, you better have a friend at the smog station willing to look the other way. In California, it is so bad that people have been arrested for doing a burnout on there own property! This place is nuts, but the weather is nice! Skip

The problem with California poliiticians

is their "political correctness" is taken to absurd levels. Because of huge population and number of "electoral votes" the exert a huge influence on the national level. EVERYBODY needs to be informed about voting record of all the politicians local, state and national and refuse to elect any with absurd ideas. Pass on info on this & other forums if they are running for national office. Just like NRA has helped gun owners, only voters groups interested in "high performance" vehicles of all types need to band together to exert pressure on the politicians. They might get a lot of money from the "tree huggers" for their campaigns, but only botes get them elected.

Jay is right on the money except that is a 50 state Fed emission law. Not cat mods for 5 years or 50k miles.

I was told it was 8 years or 80k miles. Either way, it's a LONG time.

Didn't know they brought L's over to Baldwin...

nice color L

may I ask, what mods let you hit 12.8's? Just curious... planning to the track the first time ever this weekend and trying to figure out where I should be when running in WI...

Were you on Stock F1's for that?

I have:

4lb pulley
Chip
NGK plugs
boost bypass
Factory Tech valve body
JDM cold air induction

George, i believe you are right. In CA, they ahve put the burden on the mfg. to make sure the things stay in compliance longer. It's either 7/70,000 or 8/80,000.

This comes from the state that brings you automotive welfare. If your car doesn't pass, you can have the taxpayers foot the bill for fixing your smog device, if you can't afford to do it.

Oh well, i have 4 years!

"New Vehicles Are Exempt Until Their Fifth Year

Vehicles four model years old and newer are not required to have biennial (every other year) Smog Checks performed until they are five years old. However, these vehicles must have Smog Checks performed if they are sold or initially registered in California during that time."
