Exclamation Long tube header install problem!

OK, I've got a couple of problems I'm trying to get fixed as quickly as I can:

background:
stainless long tube headers
2001 Lightning

Problem 1:
The right side (passenger) header is about 1/8th of an inch from the floorboards. The shop is worried that the heat will transfer through and melt/destroy the carpet.

Is this how it is suppused to be?

Problem 2:
The O2 sensor on the passenger side is hitting the transmission. This bends the wires all around and I'm concerned about the sensor being damaged. Is this how it fits for others?

Problem 3:
How do you connect the O2 sensors? Am I supposed to have recieved extender wires or something?

Coldie

i dont know the answers to the first two question but for number 3 i think you are supposed to get 02 sensor wire extensions. call up whoever you ordered them from and tell them to send you some asap!

good luck

Arg!

My poor baby is all apart on the lift looking lonely!

O2 sensors confirmed, my tuner was actually in the shop and said he's fed-ex them on Monday.

He actually confirmed the other two as well.

Can anyone with the stainless long-tubes calm my fears of the the first two questions?

Coldie.

The desirable thing about stainless headers, is the material keeps heat inside the tubing like a coated mild steel header. They shouldn't get hot enough to do any damage. However if you are still concerned, get some header wrap, and install some on that one part.

The sensor should not be touching anything. Is it hitting the trans itself, of the heat shield? You are supposed to drill a hole in each heat shield for the sensor to stick through. If it's actually hitting the trans, that's not good. You may need to plug that bung and add a second one in at a different angle.

cant help you with your problem but i was wondering why the location for the o 2 sensor cant be located so you dont have to cut a hole in the heat shield? i guess kooks has their reasons but was just wondering why.

here is a pic

This is how you have to drill the heat sheild.

If it wasn't so wet out I would take a pic of the right side for ya.

Look at DonC's picture, you can see that the sheild runs along the length of the collector.... There was no where to put it where the shield wouldnt need to be trimmed.

don't worry about it. If your headers generate enough to damage the carpet, then something is running a little to hot.

Problem 2:
The O2 sensor on the passenger side is hitting the transmission. This bends the wires all around and I'm concerned about the sensor being damaged. Is this how it fits for others?
Don posted a picture of the driver side. When you say hitting the transmission, do you mean when the sensor is fully tightened that it hits the transmission, or do you mean that it's such a snug fit the wires from the 02 sensor are pressed up against the tranny pan edge??

If the sensor itself is touching - problem
If the wires are press against - mine is the same way, no problems yet so I'd guess it's okay.

I had the same problem with the wires fitting snug against the pan edge. So far so good here!!
