Should I roadrace the L?

There is a cobra club renting out Gingerman raceway this weekend. I'm debating about taking the truck to this. I've race my mustang a few times, but it's currently w/o a motor.

How do you guys think the L would do?

Depends on how efficient you are using the brakes and how you use them.

Thumbs up

Absolutely!

When set-up correctly, the L is a very competent road vehicle.
(I know I've passed my share of modified Cobra Mustangs and Camaro's on the local tracks)

Spike is right, though. . .brakes can be a potential issue.

You also want to work on weight distribution. . .do things like relocate the battery, etc.

SO GO FOR IT!!!!

Well, the truck is stock with the exception of rear lowering shackles. The track isn't really that "fast". The top speed is really only about 60, except for one straightaway, so I don't think the brakes would get too hot.

I'd try it in 2nd gear, overdrive off.

Why do you say that? Would it be easier on the tranny?

In 2nd gear, OD off, you're good up to 75+ mph. I ran Altamont raceway (short oval track) that way. Without any extra shifting, you'll keep the tranny heat down and won't puke any fluid out. What are the slowest corners on this course? If they're high enough to avoid 1st gear, I'd keep it in 2nd.

Talking

Most diffently!! You will gain alot of respect with the truck when they see you in the rear veiw one second then they see you along side then inFRONT of them. The truck has huge torque for getting off the corners. But be easy on the brakes thye will fade on you if you are to hard on them.Pick where you want to pass and use them on that turn.Stan

I talked to a guy that ran his Mustang Gt at Gingerman. It sounds like there will be a lot of braking at that track. If your brakes heat up, do what I do, stop running for a while at let them cool off. It's no big deal. I take mine to Nelson Ledges. I had to talk the guy into letting me run because it was a truck. I asked to run with Porsches at Mid Ohio and they said no, because of the weight and size of the truck. You might want to make sure they will let an L run there before you make the trip up. I also had trouble with the tires chunking. Since Gingerman is a smaller track and you won't hit the same speeds as I do at Nelson (120) you may not have this problem. Check out www.fastone.com for Nelson, and also check for Performance Drivers Association. I'm going to Watkins Glen in July through them. Hope this helps. Tom
