It's all about having the right tool.
Cranked my truck the other day and it almost died a few times. Rough idle, sputtering, just you basic lack of fuel. Decided that it's probably time to change the filter. Went to the parts house to get a filter and filter tool...all they had were some cheap *** plastic clip things. I figured I could make them work, but gave up after ~10 minutes of trying. Went back to another parts house last night and got a damn nice folding 5/16" tool for ~$6. Using it, I had the filter off and changed in less than ten minutes. As easy as the change was with the right tool, I guess I'll have to do it more than every 45K miles.
Moral of the story (I guess): Make sure you're packing the right tool or you'll be trying to get it off for hours.

Yeah, it's one of those things "I kept meaning to get to." 10K miles is a good rule, IMHO. Hell, I finally cleaned my filter last night....first time for that, too. My tool looks like that, only it's shorter.

I went round and round with this last night. I told the prts guy at two different parts stores what I wanted, and they wouldn't sell me a filter because the Lightning was not called out on their computer. Turns out it is a standard 5.4L filter - picked one up today at the store (only told them it was a 5.4L).

Skank-
Don't know, yet. I haven't cranked my truck up since I changed the filter; it's on jackstands right now.
I have a flat on one of the fronts and don't have any time during the week to get it fixed (I'm usually gone from 5am to 7pm or so). I just put it up in the air to get it off the bum tire until Saturday when I can go get it fixed.
My truck only gave me problems once (about a week and a half ago). It was in the garage and had been sitting for two or three days without being started up. When I cranked it, the RPMs were all over the place (from 2K, under). I just got on the gas a bit and kept revving it. Finally got it stable enough after about 15 seconds to back it out of the garage and really put my foot in it. After about 15 seconds at 4K RPMs or so, it was back to normal. I drove it every day for a good 3 days after that and never had another problem. I'll let you know what I find out on Saturday....here's to it just being a dirty filter!
