steering shaft play?? anybody else?

steering shaft play?? anybody else?
Does your L do this? (see below)
When I was driving this past weekend I felt, what i describe as a rattle coming up thru the steering wheel. This weekend was the first really warm weekend this year.
I checked out the front end, everything was okay, with the exception of the steering shaft between the column and the box.
If you pull up and down on it (lightly), about midway between, I get about 3/4 to an inch of slop.
Driving it this week, I haven't noticed it as much, but the play is there, but more "damped", maybe by grease in the shaft?
99 L- 18700 miles
