1st oil change, and guess what??? GRRRRRR
I changed my oil (for the sec time) at about 9000 mi. and don't care if it makes this noise everyone is talking about. I don't think mine is making this noise. But, I have the extended warrenty and am not going to worry about one little noise, the thing makes many noises. If something happens to the engine I am demanding a new one from Ford. It kind of sounds like you are talking about ping. Maybe the problem is the gasoline, maybe.

I think any noise that might not appear normal should be at least documented with your dealer to assist with any future warranty issues. And this issue does not refer to detonation.

Svt's oil recommendation
Hi everyone well I just got off the phone with fords SVT division. I wanted to hear exactly what they recommend for oil changes. They stated that break-in for the L is between 1000-2000 miles. Then they recommended first change at 1000-1500 miles. Using 5-20 Dino or fords semi-syn 5-20 of course they have to plug there own oil. What they DO NOT RECOMMEND IS THE USE OF FULL SYNTHETIC OIL TILL BETWEEN 5000-6000 MILES. I even called twice and spoke to two different people. Just to make sure they said the same things. They also said they have gotten a few calls about this problem and they had no definitive answer. Who woulda guessed that. I know the marbles in a can is happening to people who use dino or synthetic oil but I for one am not going to take any chances on my cherry poppin oil change. Its dino for me and my dressed in white L. Hope she doesn't dissappoint me. Or I wont respect her in the morning. Now remember these are not my recommendations these are SVT's. So if you disagree don't take it out on me. Call this # 1-800-FORD-SVT there has been enough name calling posts on this forum lately. Lets stick to whats important our L's. p.s. I don't use paragraphs either don;t know what they are. Dennis......
Well, I talked with SVT earlier today as well, and they said they have no clue what's causing the engine to chatter right after an oil change. They told me that if it really starts to bug me, to take it to the dealership, otherwise not to worry about it. They also told me that my oil should be completely topped off. I topped off my oil, and it's still making the chattering sound. It's really wierd because it doesn't do it upon initial startup, but only after the rpms have dropped. The longer you leave it sitting, the louder the chattering seems to become. I topped it off with an additional half quart of oil today, which means my Lightning now has 6.5 quarts in there. I am no afraid that I might get oil in my intake during aggressive driving. When I asked Matt at SVT that, he told not to worry about it and just top off the oil. I will call him back tomarrow morning and tell him that topping it off didn't change anything. I am taking my truck to the dealership Wednesday anyway to have them take a look at why my Lightning keeps tracking left like the alignment is off, so maybe i'll at least have them hear it so it can be documented just in case something happens in the future.
junehhan, How bad does your truck track left? Can you hold your wheel pefectly straight and your truck stay straight? My truck has 1,500 miles now and every since I bought it it goes to the left. If I hold my wheel straight, off to the left we go. I am going to the dealer at the end of the week. I thought the alignment being off on a new truck kinda sux! That is crazy our trucks have the same left pull, maybe they screwed them up right from the factory.I would like to know if they were made close together. I would like you to post what they tell you and what they do. Later Man.

June, if you ever call SVT back and talk with Matt, ask him why it seems that every time someone calls with a question, they often get a different answer. I have called SVT on a number of occations and asked why the air intake tube on so many Lightnings have oil in them. I was first told that they had no answers to that. Then a month later and a different person on the phone, I was told that hey were telling their SVT dealer service people to keep the oil level at 5.5 qts and not the 6 qts the book states when someone comes in for that problem. I called back a few months later and was told again that they figured that the 5.5 was a fix. So far, it has worked to an extent. Now I hear you say Matt said to top the oil off. How about they all sit down at SVT and get one story the same. I used to get the rattle sound after the first and second change, but went to Mobil 10w x30 and it seems top have stopped.
I had the marble sound, then at 10,000 miles I switched to Mobil 1 5W-30 and the sound has 99.9% gone away. Immediately after the oil change, I could hear it ever so slightly, but since that first startup I have not heard it again.
My truck also pulls to the left. I think that is a common problem with these trucks. Does anyone know what causes this? Alignment problem or maybe tire pressure??? I have not taken mine to the dealership yet, but I might...

Hmmmm...based on what I am reading....Its sounds that MAYBE this rattle may be related to QUANTITY. If you guys with the rattle that have 6 quarts or more of oil (I have about 6.5 like Junehan) want to try an experiment I say we do this.....
Drain out about a half quart of oil....so you have say 5.5 or 5.7 in the motor and see what happens to the rattle. I know it sounds funny but it seems weird that right after an oil change some people get it, and some with it, lose it (the rattle that is). I have a sneaking suspicion about this and I thing the oil level may have something to do with it.
Anyone who wants to try that please do and post results...maybe we can find something.

My 02 started the marbles right after I changed the oil @ 600 miles.
Used 5w-20 dino oil.
Also has piston slap when cold.
Switched to Mobil 1 5w-30 @ 10k..
Still has piston slap when cold.
Marbles are reduced somewhat...
Not to confidence inspiring though..

first oil change performed in my 02 last weekend after a little over 3000 mi. noticed the "dieseling or bearing knock" after start up. never made that noise prior to oil change. i have forged pistons in my 427 cobra replica motor and the piston slap after cold start has a more metalic sound, the sound in the truck sounds like bearing knock. this is more of a concern. hope the svt guys are looking seriously at this.
I didn't get the marble noise until my 3rd oil change 7000 mi. I then went to Mobil 1 10w-30 no noise .... BUT on cold mornings i was getting a DRY RATTLE.
So .... my last oil change i went with Royal Purple Racing 5w-30 and ... NO marble in the can noise.

Well I had my first oil change at 3,000 miles and I took my 7 quarts of Penzoil 5w/20 to the Lube it shop, (I know I do not have the time to change my own oil), and knock on wood my engine sounds fine, when start it. No marbles, or weird noises. Thank GOD!!!!!
