What to do when buying out of state?!?

I am curious how other people have done this. I have found my perfect 'L', but it's several states away. The owner has agreed to pay for most of my plane ticket, and I'm going to fly up and drive it back. However, the owner says he'd rather not do this on the weekend unless I have cash, or have the money wired directly to his account (which doesn't sound safe AT ALL to me). I understand his concern about someone he's never met before driving off with his baby ... but what should we do? I'd personally rather not fly down with $25k in my pocket, and if I do this during the week I'm going to have to miss 2 days of work for the 19+ hour drive. I was hoping maybe I could just fly in early enough Saturday so that his bank would still be open, but no flights get there till after 1pm. I looked into an escrow account or something, but that's pretty expensive and kinda late for us to do a deal this weekend. I'm starting to think I'm just stuck with flying down Monday unless anyone has any good suggestions. My loan is through USAA, so it's a pretty well known and reputable institution.

Thanks for helping me get my 'L',

Im with BigIke, there is no reason for anyone not to take a certified check.

Get a Bank Check made out to yourself. You can endorse it if everything is as represented. If not , you can cash it. No Way to Stop Payment on a Bank Check

Cash a Big Red Flag to IRS

Just Alert your insurance Company to cover you on the way home.

That's kinda what I was thinking ... maybe I can try to explain to the owner there really is no risk involved.

Thanks for the tips guys,

With all the used L's right here in DFW, why in heck would anyone travel to get one? I know of at least 5 off the top of my head from 99's through '01's all ready to go...

To each his own I suppose...

Price ... mileage .. color ... extra parts (in that order). Maybe I just haven't seen the ones you are referring too ... if you have any links I'd love to check them out.

Thanks,

I'd go with a bank check also. Theres really no reason not to. I mean you have to give the bank the money before they give you the check (unless it's a loan), but bank checks are certified.

DamonH - got anymore pics of your 300Z
