Failed Emissions - heed help

Here in Houston, emissions in the surrounding 8 county area have been tightened for state inspection two months ago.

Before I put the LT's and high flow cats on, I wanted to get my inspection done first. Pulled the chip, disconnected the battery with lights on for 3 hours, drove on the streets and interstate for 25 miles and go to the inspection station.

For 1995 and newer vehicles, they use a scanner tool to monitor the O2 sensors, cats and EGR, but no tailpipe emissions. For 1994 and older, strict tailpipe emissions testing.

Anyway, everything was fine from the scan tool reading except the following:

Catalytic Converter: Not Ready
EGR Emissions: Not Ready

Also, coincidently, I noticed a strong amonia smell from the exhaust when I pulled back into the garage, it went away after a minute or so.

Why am I getting these readings from the scan tool? What is up with the amonia smell? All mods I have are in sig. below (with chip removed for the test).

Thanks for your help.
Chris S.

I recently had to have the same inspection done in Oregon. I passed with all mods in place. Chip, pulleys, T/B, etc. Stock exhaust except Magnaflow muffler. Check all you vacuum line, and make sure your O2 sensors are making a good connection.

Everything you wanted to know about emissions. California is the basis for most emissions for other states. Alaska is a real stickler on emissions testing. I have not had to test my L yet, because they are exempt for the 1st two years, but hope this helps.

You just need to put more miles on it. I read in the service manual page 1-17
"Ford also stores a P1000 DTC to indicate some monitors have not completed. In some states ... must perform OBD check. The IM readiness indicators must show all monitors have been completed prior to the OBD check."

News program had segment on new

High dollar cars MB, volvo, even Explorers failed OBDII emissions. Apparently some or most had service work done where battery was disconnected. Apparently, acfcording to news, some weird steps must be done in a particular order for "learning prodecure" to get back to spec. this not only varied by manufacturer, but even models from same one. Drive so many miles at 35, so many at 55, coast, not brake to stop, plus other things for ONE vehicle. bizarre.

I wouldn't pull the chip from it, if anything that makes your truck run leaner and cleaner.

I would run a lower octance gas so the fuel all burns out.

It should be ok then.

I don't know what would have caused those readings, I would say leave the chip in, it might run a little cleaner.

Glad I don't live west, here in DE if your car is only a couple of years old you can get your cars inspection renewed by mail... just got my 99 renewed for 4 years by mail, didnt even have to take off my tints
