Engine Bay Cleaning/Detaling

I know this was posted before, but what kind of stuff do you guys use to clean your engine bays? I have a car show on june 15th, so i'm starting to get ready. Its gonna be a big one. 544 cars expected to come. They said that every 1 in 3 should get a trophy because of the way they set up the classes. I registered my HDF150 in stock 1990 to 2002 class, and i should have a pretty good chance of getting something. Its at the Echelon mall in NJ. Anybody from here going? would be cool to meet with some fellow members.

Also, besides what and how you clean your engine bays, do any of you clean the underside??? Thanks

I use Simple Green, a hose(not real hard spray) and a leaf blower to get excess water out of pockets etc...JR

Simple Green will be fine unless your engine is seriously grimey. Make sure the engine is cold, wrap up the filter if it is exposed, then spray down the engine with Simple Green. I don't think Simple Green is going to attack the paint, but I've seen what Castrol Super Clean have done to a friend's fenders so I'd rather not take any chances... Be careful not to get Simple Green on any of the painted surface. Brush it in with a brush if necessary, then hose off with a garden hose. Again, be careful not to get Simple Green on the paint, and do not aim the water into areas with lots of electrical connectors. I've dried my engine off with compressed air and a towel, but I guess a leaf blower is fine as well. Have fun!

What ever you use make sure you keep the water away from the coil pacs.

Glad Wrap

Glad makes some cling-wrap covers that are used for covering bowls. Its a round plastic film with a rubber band built in. As it turns out, they are perfect for covering up coil packs, alarm systems, and other engine bay electronics.

thanks for the help, i'll pick up some simple green this weekend. Just a few more questions. I know i'm gonna sound dumb (i'm only so-so when it comes to newer engines), but what/where are the coil pacs? and has anybody used Krown (sp?) on the underside of their truck? I saw it on a show on speedvision (dream car garage?) and was wondering how that stuff worked, and exactly what it did. Thanks again. Wish me luck at the show

It will be difficult to keep water off the coil packs if you clean the eng. I've had luck just spraying Simple Green or Eagle One tire cleaner on everything but my open air filter and then spraying it off after about 10 mins soak-time. I then start the eng up to help dry it off and you can then take it for a 20 min. drive to dry it completely. I then use Eagle One Tire Protectant(or some other protectant) to spray evething again--wait overnight and then wipe the excess off for a low-gloss look. Just don't use high pressure spray with the water hose.

S-100 Total Cycle Cleaner.

You can get it at MOST Harley Bike Stores.

Spray it on while engine is cool, hose it off.

No water spots and doesn't change the color of any of the metals. Just makes them look like NEW.

I've been using it for over 10 years on my Mustang before shows and I love it.

If the Harley guys spray it ALL over their bikes it can't be all that bad.

There is this stuff I use called DC-2 enigine cleaner/detailer lkit. Comes in 2 cans. You spray the cleaner on a moderatley warm engine and let it sit 15mins and hose it off. Of course don't drowned your coil packs and alternator. Then you drive aound to get all the water out. And then spray this detailer stuff on it. MAkes it look brand new.

I found this at http://waxdepot.safeshopper.com/65/315.htm?896

I read about CD-2 Engine Detailer awhile back here and in some truck magazines and finally found a kit at my local Super Target. I paid $6.00 for my kit. I used the degreaser tonight and was quite impressed with the way it attacked the ole truck and you could see the dirt run for dry land! LOL

Anyways, I will use the step #2 can before I go to bed and it is a can of nothing more than silicone dressing from what I have seen.

I will post some pictures Sunday and should have my long awaited Showya F 150 truck gallery fired up by Monday!

Alright, i'm gonna try and find that cd2 stuff at pepboys. I don't really like to pay 7 dollars for it and another 7 for shipping. Anyway, anybody ever use Krown for the underbody? I'm trying to stop whats rusting and maybe paint what i can (rear end, leafs, etc.) Any suggestions for cleaning underneath???

Thanks for the help

I use simple green also. I use a spray bottle with it mixed about 75% water and 25% SG. I dry it with a short drive and/or leaf blower, the use a 50/50 mixture of armor all and water. This leave a somewhat shiny, but very clean look when the water evaporates. Here is a pic of the final look...
