OH *****!! Smoke from ...

the front right wheel area.
Story goes...
On my way to work stuck in a heavy section of traffic, I see an old fox body stang come fling up behind me. We weasle through traffic to a section that clears. We're on the last stretch of this paticular road where there is no (I again say none) traffic. Last car turns off and now completely open. We go from 40MPH roll, me behind him. By 60 we're the same distance, aprox 2 car lengths. He moves left lane and we still got it floored. About 90 I start to pass. 110 I got 2 truck lengths on him. STOP - red light. Whew that was pretty fun. He takes left while I go straight. Now that stop was pretty quick; light was just around a curve and I was hoping it was green. Usually is. So the stop was from about 110 - 120 to 0 in about 150-200 feet. Truck did great. Sounded like the stang had some work done, exhaust anyway. ( BTW, I'm all stock) neway, I'm going, and start to get a smell. Haven't smelled it before, well maybe, but it's been a while. Come to a stop at a light and low & behold some white smoke floats up from right front wheel area. Thinking I must have lit the breaks up pretty good. I get to work in about another 3 miles and take a look and see no damage.

Tell me it was just hot breaks. Smoking stoped pretty quick. Wasn't there (smell or smoke) but for about 50 seconds. As soon as I saw the smoke, that was it. Then I started rolling and the smell went away.

I've ridden my brakes really hard a few times... testing 60-0 and 100-0 breaking distances... never had any smoke...

The only thing I can offer as a "maybe" is that you had something on your rotor, a build up of something, that didn't burn off until you really heated them up.

What was the smell like? Like burning tranny oil? Anti freeze burning? was is a burning smell or what? (I know it's tough to descibe smells, but it may help others in piin pointing your problem)

Your're right, hard to describe. Based on things I've smelled before,
Don't think it was clucth,
Don't think it was oil,
Don't think it was rubber.
It seemed like I hadn't smelled it before, well kinda. If I had it was a long time ago. I'm going to try and look at it again around lunch, a much closer look and just see what I see

You most likely just lit them up a bit... i've done that a couple times. Probably some anti-squeal lube or some fragmented metal particles in the pads going up in smoke. The smell to me was kinda like a steel mill; just about as stinky as a clutch :-)

I wouldn't worry about it..I know for sure its the brakes..I've done that a few times and got the same thing..I was also worried but come to find in hard braking stirs up some serious heat between the metals
