New Pictures - Stereo Install

Well about 1 month ago I traded in my 00 Gt and the 99 Lightning for a 2002 Red Lightning. Since then i have spent every weekend over at my friend David's house working on the stereo portion of the truck. It is a slow process, but it is coming along quite nicely. I just thought I would pass along a link to the photos for everyone to check out.

Let me know what you think.

P.s. David is the man and I in no way can take credit for this work.

Thanks

I still have more to upload that shows all of the wiring and detail we went through.

Plus I am still working on the picture order so that you can get an idea of the steps involved.

I cannot take any credit at all for any of the work, except the dynamat piece. My Friend David has been busting his A$$ on it for me the whole time. The kickpanels are built up using fiberglass and polyester layers. Once the rough shape is built you start adding bondo to make it glass smooth. The bondo also gives you the shape you desire. Once that was done I went to an uphoelstry (sp?) shop and picked up some medium gray vinyl (highway brand I think). David then used a sprayer with contact cement on the vinyl and kick panels and streched it over the pods. The vinyl matches really really well to the plastic. I will upload more photos as things progress. The plan is to build the box out of MDF and fiberglass. The MDF will be used for the framing and then the figerglass to make it pretty and smooth .

I am going to have my father-in-law paint the box to match the truck so it should be pretty cool looking when it is all done.

Nice job on the custom kick pannels! I have a question. Did you notice a big difference with the dynamat install? Lets put it this way... Was it worth the time and money? Would you ever do it again, given another vehicle?

Well first off it is not actually dynamat brand as that stuff is way overpriced in my opinion. Here is what I used:

http://www.b-quiet.com/brownbread.html

In total it took about 1 1/2 70' rolls to do the truck. So after I do the box I should have a little left and it will have cost me about 300 bucks. Did it make a difference? YES. The trucks is very solid sounding now. It got rid of the usual resonance that you hear and it greatly cut down on overall road noise. Is it as quiet as say a Lexus. NO. It's still a truck with huge cab vents directly above the exhaust and behind the passengers. Would I do it again. YES. The cost was not that bad as far as I was concerned, but the labor to do it was a nightmare. I know it looks easy, but it is not. You have to roll and roll and roll to get out all of the air pockets. Just giving you a fair warning, it will take about 2 days to do a regular cab f150.

OK I updated album 2 with the descriptions so that you get a better idea of what is happening during the process. I will work on album 1 and 3 later today or tomorrow.

I did the same thing in my truck with 50lb of Dynamat Extreme. It took an entire saturday from 8AM to 8PM. My fingers really took a beating. ROLL ROLL ROLL!!! It was DEFINITELY worth it! My truck cab is significantly quieter now.

It's still a truck with huge cab vents directly above the exhaust and behind the passengers.
I laid a thin sheet of loose polyfill over those vents (on the inside) and glued it in place around the frames with 3M spray adhesive. It had a minor but noticeable effect on road noise. Overall I figure I knocked 5dB off the noise at 60mph.

Kutter,
I finally go the descriptions in place and I think the order is right now to.

snoopy you are right about the the hands...my fingers were killing me after all that rolling, but it is worth the effort. The next time I pull the interior apart I will check out the polyfill on the cab vent trick and see how that works.

That is some sick *****. Question: If you apply the parking brake does it hit the floor speaker?
