Question Discount Tire question?

I know this isn't directly related to Lightnings, but figured that it'd be helpful to us. Plus, I think I remember a few of y'all with direct links to Discount.

I saw this on another board (non-automotive). It doesn't make sense to me, but this guy isn't the first one on the thread to bring it up. Why would someone make a completely different tire for one particular retailer? Maybe it's for all national chain "discount" retailers? Any ideas or thoughts?

I'm with RC on this one. I used to get my tires from Discount, but never again.
I did a little research and found out that all of their brand name tires (Goodyear in particular) are custom made for Discount Tire....lower quality tire but they have the Goodyear name stamped on them, however if you go to any REAL Goodyear dealer and ask them for the tire model you got from Discount, they'll laugh and tell you they don't have them for the above reason.

About a year ago I needed a tire and went to buy a single tire from Goodyear. They inspected my tires and pointed out that two of the other ones had slipped belts, turns out it wasn't just ONE bad tire after all....I had to buy FOUR new tires to replace the sub-par Discount variety.
And no, I'm not a sucker...I'm pretty savvy when it comes to automobiles, I didn't get "taken" by the Goodyear guys....the other tires really were bad......take it for what it's worth, but I'll never do business with DT again.

Strangely enough I have purchased 3 sets of rims w/tires from them, with no problems at all. Tires ranging from Dunlops to Nittos, in sizes ranging from 15 to 17 inch.

Have to wonder how much of what you read is urban legend and how much is reality...

I don't know for sure about Discount Tire, but all the major tire companies do in fact build certain tires exclusively for certain retailers. As a distributor for one of these brands,I get calls for these tires frequently but cannot purchase them.....I have not done the research on the quality,so i can't comment on that

The Automakers do the same thing... try going to firestone or goodyear and buy the excact tire that came on your car or truck... In many cases you cant - That tire is ONLY available on the new car ....

However I dont believe the Goodyear F1's I bought at Discount tire are any different than the F1's available anywhere else...

The same goes for many aftermarket parts and fluids - for better or worse. Many of the factory-spec OEM parts are simply not available in the aftermarket or dealerships.
