Question installing subs

I know there are some L's out there with subs installed, my question to you is where did you run the power cable through the firewall. How did you get the cable from the battery to the amp.

No sub but I did just install an amp. I ran my power cable across the firewall under the plastic cover. Dropped it down on the drivers side and into the cab through the rubber grommet the boost gage line goes through. Used a Dremel and hogged out a hole next to the gage line and ran it through.

Yup...what Silver said...

drivers side there is a 2 inch gromet above the steering column you can sneak a line through. You need to drill or punch a hole through it. be careful not to hit your boost line! That's where I ran my power line through. Down the drivers side threshold and back behind the seats...

Here's a pic from the engine compartment... just to the right of the s/c... You will see the boost line in the middle and the power line I ran off center towards the left side...

I drilled a hole in the bottom of my firewall and ran the thick 0 gauge wire though the hole (don't forget a rubber grommet).

A little trick i use is to tape the wire to a really long plastic tie and fish it through, then pull it up to the battery.

I then ran the wire underneath the door sill like so:

I was always told to run the ground wire along the opposite side of the side you run RCA cables down. This will help keep any noise/whine interference down. Goodluck with everything!

You can run the power wire under the cab to the grommet under the door sill(Yes a #4 wire will go through it).Run the wire from the door sill under the carpet to a factory hole under the passenger seat for the amp.No holes drilled or carpet cuts.

I pulled the RCAs around to the driver sill to separate drive signal from power.

Uhm... not to tell you your business Jon, but you typically want to keep the ground as short as possible and go directly to the frame where the amp sits. This reduces the chance of shorting the two line together and saves you money. No wire is nearly as big as your trucks frame.

You are correct about keeping the power and the audio lines as far apart as possible.

Also, keep the fuse on the positive cable no more more than 20 inches from the battery connection. This will lessen the chance of shorting your battery/truck out. Make sure you fuse your power line! I've seen some nice fires at a few comps cuz some do-it yourselfers installed their system without a fuse on the battery side.

I was a pro installer for 2.5 years, so I have some idea what I'm talking about. (not a lot, but some! )

no need to cut..

theres a hole under the passengers side door sill...

0 guage wire coming from battery..

my power wire goes from the battery, forward to a circuit breaker, then back between the inner fender liner & firewall, then up thru the grommet under the door sill..

theres also enough room for a line driver & bass cube in the dash..

plenty of room for 2 12's..

i ran the speaker wires down the drivers side, the rca's down beside the bottom of the passenger side of the tranny hump, and the power wire down the pass side sill.

Actually it has to do with capacitence and noise, not shorting them out...

"You are correct ab"out keeping the power and the audio lines as far apart as possible."

Correct again, except its long 'parallel' runs, running in 90 degree angles or at least 3-4 inches away will surfice, and remember that your also wanting to stay away from the FACTORY wiring, it has as much or more noise passing through it than your direct battery feed.

Well put, except I typically suggest withing 12 inches of the battery. ALso remember that the fuse size is just as important as where you put it, 60 amp fuse on 12 gauge wire=bad idea

Good post though guys.

Heh, couldn't you guys have just used a stack of pennies in a plastic tube? It might've been cheaper than all that copper!

Who knows, it might even bend better.
