Just read a thread at nloc that got me thinking

I have about 1500 miles on my 02 and i swear it sounds like there is an exhaust leak underneath the hood somewhere when really giving overdrive hell. at WOT it doesnt make any sound but when giving OD all it has going up a hill without downshifting there is a moderately loud exhaust leak sounding noise. This wouldnt be a loose plug would it????? I'm scared to jump in the middle of my truck now. You guys think its worth checking out? What tools are needed to tighten the plugs in it cause I'm tempted to make a trip to sears and get them.

I have had what i think is an exhaust leak on the passenger side of the motor
from day one. The dealer keeps telling me its the injectors. The noise gets louder as the motor warms up. So i don't think it's the injectors, it's not really
that loud but still drives me crazy. Iv'e had the plugs checked they are all tight,
so i have learned to live with it.

Sounds like possibly a loose plug or detonation. The way you describe it with the overdrive is a prime time for detonation. Try some better fuel or add some Toluene.

Well at least I'm not the only one. And yes it does sound as if its on the pass. side. There is a slight ticking noise at idle as well.

Should I bet getting detonation when bone stock? I hope not.

I am bringing this back to the top cause this sounds like the same thing I am going through as well. my 2000 has almost 40,000 miles on it and just had this start happening. I have had new plugs installed several months ago so we are going to tackle that first. I an hoping this is what it is since I am dumbfounded otherwise except for the exhuast leak idea.

I bought a 01 last june, and i always noticed a exhaust leak type noise in it just like you are explaining. I checked it out at work and determined that there was nothing wrong with it, and drove another 01 and it sounded the same. I just wrote it off as a characteristic of that exhaust design.

Question detail, etc:

I hope it isn't but it could be a blown head gasket--a 'small' piece might have exited the gasket.

I notice the what seems to be the same noise on my 02(4,000miles) It does not sound like detonation to me and I had the same concern after reading the NLOC thread. I checked all my plugs yesterday and all is good. Probably nothing to worry about. Mash the GO pedal and !!!!!

I had that, chased it for over a year and it turned out ot be the idler pulley on the supercharger belt,, doesn't hurt anything but they replaced it, took a long time but it fixed it, have your dealer check that.
