5.4l 3-valve....

A guy I know in the KC plant said 3v engines are being tested and a limited production will start this summer. A 2003L w/appearance package and 450/450 numbers?? Maybe.....

Yeah, I have heard, from a couple sources myself, of 3 Valve heads being tested back in November.
But I won't believe it until I see it.

If Ford produces them all 5.4 owners will rush to buy. Or, come on aftermarket and make some for existing owners!!!

makes race prepped heads for the 5.4. They also do short block and long block build ups. Of course all this comes at a pretty steep price.

If you do buy a set if and when they do come out, you can bet the lower intake will not match the ports. Three valve would be two intake and one large exhaust. That means the intake port design would then change also.

We would need an after market company to make a lower intake that would use the factory intercooler and S/C assembly and fit the new heads. Then you would need a chip to run it.

Just my .02!

Cool

HI!... I have seen FORD's new 5.4 3-valve cylinder heads. They do have two small intake valves and one large exhaust. The spark plugs now come through the valve cover in their own port. Definately going to be a lot easier to do plug changes. These new 3-valve heads WILL not bolt up to current intake manifolds. The intake port is totally different. A friend of mine works at a machine shop here in WINDSOR and they have about 20 sets of complete 3-valve 5.4 heads there, complete with valves ans camshafts. They even have a complete 5.4, 3-valve engine there too. Sorry I can't get any pics. The boss would'nt allow it AT ALL.

I've read lots of stuff about what the new L's will have to offer and beleive it or not, this is the rumor i've heard the most prominece for,, way to go ford,, if its up,, my truck will be traded in hands down.

is there something wrong with me,, thinking about this stuff makes me get all excited and kinda funny feeling and not really able to sleap so well like its christmas,,,,, when will 03's come out anyways.,, regardless of what they have,, when will we here about it,, it seems to be the most tight lipped car or truck for has been making, i mean we heard about the 03 mustang way before it came out.

Toast-I agree. Very tight lipped everywhere. The FACT that these 3valves will be produced THIS summer should mean something. I wonder if FORD is #1) waiting until 02's are sold as to not affect sales and 2) going to drop a little suprise on the Dodge SRT and Chevy SS!!! Either way i love MY X-PLAN PIN # THAT IS GOOD UNTIL SUMMER OF NEXT YEAR!!

lol,,,, i wouldn't care,, i should be able to easily get an x-plan,,, gotta love living about 5 minutes away from ford world hedquarters but i would at this point gladly trade my L in,, keep the appearance mods i have, and put down a few grand just to get the new one if this engine upgrade is true,,, i would not even think about trading in my L if there was any less of an upgrade then the 3 or 4 valve heads. Bottom line is i love my L the way it is, but I'd love not to be tempted whatsoever to get an 03 cobra,,, this way i'd be strong on the L side whatsoever.

its weird,, earlier today heard more rumors of this not from this board, but from a ford employee early this morning who parked his Cobra next to my truck who was in my store,,, makes me wonder if something leaked in order to see if there was interest out htere for it.

I heard all the 3V engines produced for 2003 will be going overseas. I have a bunch of photos but at the risk of getting slapped on the hand by Uncle Henry, I will refrain until a later date.

As for retrofitting the 3V heads, don't bother. The VCT (variable cam timing) would be a nightmare to calibrate (3V engines use a completely new processor, wiring harness, throttle control, etc.) plus you still need a custom intake and exhaust...might as well go with the 4V heads which would offer the most benefit in the end.

As a matter of fact,, seems i heard of new 02L, new focus svt, new 03 mustang, and even the gt40 lots before they were announced,, or at least very founded rumors of them. I think all detroit area L owners probably hear these rumors first as well. Its easy to notice things, or hear about things going on with ford when its in our own backyard. I'm 22 and have many many friends getting jobs, or with jobs in the enginearing feild here, but why is ford so tight lipped about the next L,,, seems to be because of what chevy and dodge are doing,, seems to be like a poker game,, in other words, gm and dodge are just waiting on ford and for is waiting on them to see who makes the first move hear. This gets me excited and welll,, impatient as an L owner. I'll be an L owner as i've been, its just a question of how happy i'll be in the end. and to think,, just when you thought you could not be happier with your truck

I'm surprised to hear that the SHM engine had major problems...those guys seem to be up to speed on the modular stuff.

Piston to valve clearance should have been an easy check...
