Thanks for the info guys & gals?

Wrongdayj is right, the "red NIAGRA" is no fun! Punched a hole and drained the pan, but still makes a big mess when you take the pan off. Beware...

FT valve body, 4x4 pan with drain plug, the right fluid & 1-hour =

If you haven't got the FT valve body yet; no excuses, GET IT!

Thanks Factory_Tech (Greg Evans) & PSP (Lisa).

Bro you are dumb as a box of rocks. Mercon V is what you are supposed to use.

Make sure your bottles don't say Mercon V. And don't use a fluid that says it meets both Mercon and Mercon V specification.
(That comes directly from Matt at SVT)

If you can get it in your area, try to get Castrol. It seems to be the only fluid I've found that prominently displays the Ford specification(s) that their fluid meets or exceeds. I'm sure that the other brands meet the same specs, but I kinda feel safer knowing that they are aware enough of the specifications to display that their fluids are in compliance.

Oh, and while you're at the parts store. . .99% of people who have done this service themselves also install a drain-plug while they are in there. The red NIAGRA ain't no fun.

Have fun!!

Mercon V is what the dealership uses dumbass.

They didn't back in 2002 which is when this thread was last active. The 4R100 is a Mercon transmission. The approval to use Mercon V in a 4R100 didn't come till 2007.

Nice first post, by the way - calling someone a dumbass is no way to win respect and credibility here and bringing up a 15 year old thread just to slam someone is ridiculous.

Some forums you visit may allow this type of communication, but no matter what your viewpoint, it's not acceptable here.

I have a 2005 Ford Escape 3.0 V6 with a CD4E automatic transmission. This first generation, shared with the Mazda Tribute, requires Mercon only -- not Mercon V which was proven to cause damage in that generation. The following generations starting in 2008 used the Mercon V.

I know that this is comparing an orange to an apple but since the 2002 F150 manual transmission took Mercon, can it also take Mercon V without any damage?

I'm getting ready to buy a 2002 F150 with the manual 5-speed and changing fluids is first item on my list.

You're ten years out of date. All applications originally specified to use Mercon were changed to Mercon V ten years ago. Obviously, manuals printed before then could not predict the future.

The manual transmission is not fussy - you can use any ATF or even GM Synchromesh fluid. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in mine.

...or you could use any of the aftermarket fluids that meet the old spec that are still available for anything that originally used Mercon. It's a lot cheaper and more readily available at retail than is Mercon V and its compatibles.
