Might buy Bill Murrays old L "Moby"
Went to the Lincoln dealer where he traded it in, I wish I knew he was going to trade it in. Anyway they are asking $25,000, it has 19,000 miles needs 3 new tires. Those of you who know Bills mods (exhaust, chip, are hard cover, etc.) what do you think it's worth?
Thanks
I used to be on F150online alot when I had my 99 XLT V6 supercab hopefully I will be back on here soon with a Lightning.

Hey Darin
Way overpriced at 25k! 21 would be more like it--with 4 new F1's! Dealer can't really expect to benefit from intake, exhaust, etc. From a "resale" perspective mods even hurt---unless your enthusiasm increased their worth. Bill's a nice guy and maintained truck except for tires! Hope they did a good job of detailing, it needed it. I live in E. Cobb with a red 2k. Remember a 2002 Xplan is about 29--also has 380 hp compared to 360 for 99 & 2000. Good luck if you decide to buy it.
DONT use x plan as a pricing guidline when shopping for a Lightning!!Unless you have a pin # AND a dealer willing.Youll just beat yourself up over it if you do.MOST people pay sticker so start there.
In one of bills previous post,He mentioned that his truck was good to him and I dont think a older gentlmen would do any damage to it.I recall him saying that even the intercooler didnt act up on him so if you buy it,Make sure its updated before you take delivery and 4 new tires.I think that truck is worth about -$23k since you know the history and you are NOT going to find one for $21k anywhere period.I dont even know whay someone would say that.IM a dealer and I see them doing more than $21k at auction!!
Im sure the lincoln dealer probally didnt even buy that truck out from the lease turn in yet,They probally put it out there until they have to send it back to ford to see if they get any bites on it.I DONT know but I think the lease buy out should be in the LOW $20ks-21k range so the dealer will probally sell you the truck for around 23K with 4 new tires that the DEALER has to pay for if sold and any prep -reconditioning and so on.....
And for the record,Just because someone can afford a used Lightning at $23k doesnt mean they can afford a $33k new one.Thats over $200 a month diffence which IS ALOT OF MONEY A MONTH DIFFERENCE to most people!! Buy it and be happy. If everybody could just go out and buy a new truck whenever they wanted .there would be NO used vechicles and if there were, they would have LOW LOW resale
Life isnt as simple as we all think....

tell ya the truth,If the truck is really nice, you could feel comfortable paying a little more than 23k.In my area,People pay anywhere from 24-26 for a used one depending on city locations or out in the boonies.I personally would not pay over 24k but there are not exactly Tons of them sitting on lots every where depending on where you live.for instance....
Back in ((october (winter) ))whch means alot for used 2wd truck market .I was in the process of building my new home and I had a lot of problems with my 00 Lightning.I combined the problems with the $600 a month payment and felt I would (wholesale)sell my Lightning to free up some money for my house.I was in a rush and I sold it to 128 Ford in reading ma.It was white with chrome wheels.I sold (wholesaled dealer to dealer) it to them with 4 bald tires for $21,100 .they turned around and sold it for $25k pretty quick. My truck LOOKED brand new. They also had a BEAT 99 for $27k asking price.
Now this is a dealer who asks $5000 over sticker for a new one but you can beat them up to sticker with some fight. They just try to screw who they can......

Hi all:
Wow, this is fun sitting on the sidelines!!
JakeMarietta: I spent $150 to detail it and had a full 20K service done on it the day I traded it in.
LightningQuick: The buyout was ~$16K and the residual was $15,400. Judging by prices in the local Auto Trader, I suggested to Darin to offer $23 and demand the remaining 3 tires (I was using the spare because I caught a roofing nail a couple of weeks ago). I also have the original air filter and complete exhaust with 6K miles on them here at the store. Also have a pretty aggressive PSP chip somewhere.
As I told Darin, it never gave me any grief to speak of, other than keeping it spit shiny clean (it was a working truck sort of) I took good care of it. That and a dollar gets you a cup of coffee, though, as it could spit the #3 plug tomorrow or dump the intercooler or whatever. That's life. BTW, I also gave the dealer the little mailer tube with the paperwork to get the intercooler replaced under warranty so if you buy it Darin make sure they give it to you.
If you buy it Darin, I will give you the framed SVT certificate that I have in my home office attesting to it's VIN, build sequence etc.

Crap!!!!
Dang edit thingie won't work.
Another comment re: my treatment of Moby, two of the three F1s on the truck were the original tires and still have over half the tread left and could have gone another several thousand miles before they really had to be replaced.

I would never try to "out Raoul Raoul" but with the name of Bill Murray, I have had to develop a raised sense of humor over the last 20 or so years.
This whole thing reminds me of when I was a teenager or a young adult. I just broke up with my girlfriend (not a three year relationship of course) and my best Bud is interested in pursuing said ex girl friend. So, he says. "well what's the skinny, what is she like?
Since I have already either broken the relationship or had it broken by ex girlfriend, I have no stake in the outcome so I try to be as honest as I can.
Keeping it clean, she is a neat dresser, well spoken and is in good health. From time to time, she throws a fit for no particular reason (chip backs out of the PC), she is cranky when I take her to a restaurant she doesn't like (unfortunate tank of bad gas) and so on.
In order to keep our relationship going, she wants to go to ever more fancy places (modifications such as exhaust system, chip, filter etc.) and it seems it will never end.
I want to settle down a bit (4 doors, sunroof, stereo and AC in the back seats) and she wants to keep on partying.
So, we part and then comes best Bud (Darin in this case) wanting to have a fling with my ex girl friend.
As have many, I am in the position of saying that I have lived with a Tempest, survived it and want to go back to a more normal mortal life and I wish my Bud well but he has to understand the nature of the Beast.
A thoroughbred she is, but she carries all the baggage of the breed. As my son says of his wife, "she is a high maintenance lady", which may not be all that bad.

I went by the dealer this morning a took it for a test "drive" then I went back later in the day with the boss... I mean wife to take her for a ride and let her see it. She doesn't know Bill but she knows I think highly of him and her thoughts were "you know the previous owner and you know he took good care if it" which was her way of saying I can buy it if I want to. We just bought a bigger more expensive house that she fell in love with and I think she figures "he let us buy the house so I will let him buy the truck". It's just I am not sure if I can handle $400 payments right now assuming they sell it to me for $23000 and I put down $4000 (6% for 60 months). Well when we were there late this afternoon the dealer said I could take it home for the weekend and bring it back Monday night. So "Moby" is sitting in my driveway right now, but not before making a trip to the furniture store to pick up a new chair for the living room. Best damn timing I have had in a long time, my partner had our company truck and I need a truck for about 2 hours. I appreciate all the input and opinions especially yours Bill, I will keep everyone posted.
Bill were the instrument cluster lights not working when you traded it in? I checked the fuse its good but no lights, the radio and climate controls light up and the dimmer is working.

Darin,
Not to try and talk you outta the bolt, but I thought
a LONG time before signing on to the 60 month plan.
That's 5 whole years ... It would be like driving a '97
lightning this year when you finally can get rid of it,
I told my daughter the same thing when she wanted
that Acura! <lol>
If ya can't stand it any longer then DO IT. I did, and
I don't regret it for a minute. The best thing is meeting
all these really nice people that help me learn about the
dragstrip and the trucks themselves.
<Y'all know who I am talking about here ...>

SVT_KY Usually with any loan, mortgages included we pay a little extra every month to cut the term down. I really saw the advantage of it when we just sold our house. 6 years of 1 extra payment a year took a big chunk out of the principal. The other thing is these trucks really hold their value and with Bills only having 19000 miles I will hopefully do well if I ever did sell it.
I could by a 01 Cobra for less money but I am tired of driving what the masses do. I have been averaging one car or truck per year and I am tired of buying and selling, but I get bored or frustrated with them. The last 2 a 88 Mark VII LSC (trying the different route) replacement parts were a hard find and it would take alot of money to make it go fast. The other one a 93 5.0 tbird, sure its a 5.0 but all mustang performace parts are not a bolt on and the specific tbird aftermarket parts are expensive. If I did sink money into either of those I would never get it back in resale. I think the L is my answer, a Ford product that goes like hell and you don't see one at every stop light.

Morning Darin:
Dangit, I forgot about the dash lights. They went out a couple of months ago. Actually, I almost never drove the truck at night. Pat and I work the store the same days, same hours and are always home well before dark. If we went anywhere at night she preferred to go in her car. So, I sort of forgot about it.
Somewhere there is a thread about there being two fuses for the dash, the second one being in a junction box under the hood. I never bothered to look after finding the underdash fuse was OK.
Two things then. The truck is only one week out of warranty and Pugmire should be able to warranty whatever it takes to fix it. If they give you static, tell them it is a safety issue and they have to fix it one way or the other.
While I am at Sunday Morning Confession, a couple of other gremlins that can crop up from time to time. In cold/humid weather, the IAC valve would sometimes stick. You could either tap it or just hold the throttle down for a few seconds until it unstuck and you were on your way. The symptom was it would start but not idle. Next, the chip has come slightly unseated 4 times in three years which is not fun but goes with the mod sometimes. The engine stalls and you have to get off the street quickly if it happens. I had been reseating it once a month and it has not happened for over a year now. Best do that and retape it if you buy it.
I asked Pugmire to grease the bump stops in the steering and did not drive it after the service, but Moby has had the famous 99/00 clunk at full lock when backing up since day one. Usually only comes back when it is about due for service. In the last year, the drivers side window is occasionally a bit lazy going down, I don't know why. Not consistent and not a real bother but it was happening.
You have to remove the radio antenna if you take it to a car wash and once a year I would clean out the threads on both ends. This needs to be done again as you have a slight loss of reception if you don't.
In addition to the normal LOF service last week, I had them clean the fuel system and change the fuel filter so that is good to go for 15/20K. I never had a fuel pump problem, but that is not uncommon on the 99 model I have read. Sal at PSP and perhaps others have replacement clamps available if you pop a clamp.
On the drivers side header, there is a heat shield that from time to time would contact I believe part of the steering and cause an annoying buzzing that you could both feel and hear. Solution is to find where it is contacting and bend it back again away from whatever it is rubbing on. Did this twice in three years.
When you get into the throttle hard for more than a few seconds, you will get a burning rubber smell which I have always attributed to one of the belts just slightly slipping. It has done this from day one and is still on the original belts and never a problem. It impresses the heck out of passengers when you floor it at 40 or so and run it up to 70 or 80 and when they remark on the smell I would tell them that was the tires lighting up. The truck is so impressive, they believed me every time!
Hope this helps.

Bill, a refreshingly honest man!
For showing Moby's few warts. It's dealer's, not your responsibility to do detailing and needed service--at their internal, not your retail prices. Just shows what a conscientious guy you are. I still stand by suggested price, maybe 22k with tires. It's 4 model years 99,00,01, and 02-if only 3 calendar years old. Bill wish I'd known, could have bought bassani & filter systems from you since you still have stock items. Oh, Well. Darin, I could be wrong, but only way you'll get 6% interest on any used vehicle is to buy it on home equity line. When I retired and no longer could deduct interest as business expense, I moved remaining balance to newly opened home equity line and now have 4 3/4%. Know you will enjoy Moby if you buy it. Grat L community on this board.
