Excited, I noticed the same thing with my recently purchased 1997 F-150 Ext cab long bed 4x4. I was told from people on this post, that FORD wanted the a/c to run on most of the settings to keep the windows from fogging up, so they engineered it this way.
You should find that the a/c will NOT come on when the dial is set to PANEL or the FLOOR settings. Any of the other settings the a/c will run. I find this is annoying, it's one of those marketing ideas I guess ......There should be a shutoff switch, but the Ford geniuses feel that the masses are too stupid to know when to turn on the a/c to remove fogging. Anyway, sorry bout the long post,.....but just use PANEL or FLOOR setting and the a/c should not come on........

Anybody ever leave their computer and read something other than what is on the screen? We were all supplied an owners manual with our truck. Try reading it. Don25 has clearly answered your question, and now you argue with him. It's all in the manual.
If you're just looking for social interaction, try a bar.

Hurricane Larry i am NOT arguing with anyone! don25 says use the floor or panel selection and the ac does not come on or should not, maybe i am reading this wrong? My ac comes on on floor and panel setting ,does the manual state otherwise,if so then someting is wrong with my ac/controll panel?
what makes you think i am arguing anything?

As far as the a/c goes I found that out this weekend when I had my first long trip and it was raining. I thought, hmmmm....the fresh air must be cool and never gave it a second thought. Now that I read this it makes sense.
All the eng at Ford have to do is just add an A/C button, but that's just to simple for them.
That button would cost 7 cents...on their scale of production thats quite a few bucks they save.
Remember the new "diode" thingie in the 2001+ trans? Supposed to save them what, 10 cents or something?
