Angry The Infamous Clunk !

OK ...

The only resolution that Ford shows for this is to
lube the "hard-stops" that are there because of
the "L" 's larger tires.

The service advisors has searched the OASIS system
and finds no service bulletins in regards to this problem.

After he called the "Hotline" he got the "grease the stops"
resolution, and did what they told him to do.

Question:

I only have 3000 miles on my truck, so why would they
not have some Preventive Maint written about this problem
when the PREP the SVT's ??? I really LIKE the Herb's
washer fix, but am concerned about warranty implications
with the Cam Bolts and all that stuff.

How do you get a service advisor that KNOWS anything
about our trucks? <esoterically speaking>

My clunk started showing up a few weeks ago when
I back outta the driveway and cut the wheels to the
right ...

Clunk

I just bought my L with 6K miles on it and called the dealer when I first heard the "clunk". The service tech's brother has a L and he said that it was nothing to fix it, they would order the parts and for me to bring it in this wednesday. I will see what they do.

Also ther is a TSB on the problem you can find the TSB numbers at the TSB's aand recalls section on the left of the left. I had the number and the service writher said he didn't need it that they would fix it.

We'll see

Not familiar with "the clunk". For someone with a New truck and who is fairly new to the board, could you please elaborate?

Where on the truck does it come from? When does it happen? What is TSB?

Help!

Thumbs up

Hey,

There may be a new Clunk washer supplier coming to town and they are going to be made of a better quality metal and almost 1/2 the price of Herbs. .

Anyone know if the 2002's have the corrected washers
(toothed) by default ???

After the grease, my clunk is still there. ... and exactly
where Ford said it was ... Now I printed out the TSB and
will hand deliver it ....

On mine the washer was still the normal flat one.

I didnt feel like waiting for washers, so I just mig welded the existing washer to the frame... 5 minutes work, a bit of spraypaint, no clunk.

Still need to get the cam bolts and have a good alignment done... more for better handling and compensating for the rear drop than anything else.

Yes. My 02 has the toothed lockwasher on it. At 2500 miles it hasn't slipped yet. I get the 'clunky-knocking' at full lock in parking lots, but there is zero evidence of the toothed washer having slipped. At some point in the near future I've got to get under there with some thick grease for the steering stops.

I guess it's only a matter of time for the arm to slip and the real clunks to begin. Nothing yet, though.

I think when it does slip I'll take it down to Jiffy lube or Firestone and have their 900lb gorillas torque them down with their impact wrenches. If its anything like how they do oil filters or lug nuts, they'll NEVER move!

LOL Snoopy ...

Well, I went back tonight WITH the TSB and the OASIS
numbers. The service manager says it didn't come up on
his computer because the TSB is for 99 - 01.

So he goes out and crawls under the front and guess what?

I have regular FLAT washers on the arm asmbly!!!

So now he's ordering the parts to fix it ....

I asked about the herb washer and cam bolt fix,
and mentioned not wanting to void the warranty,
and he said, don't worry about that ... the
service guys overreact sometimes.
