Please help.
My 2001L (7200miles) has a noticeable "click" from the left front wheel when applying the brakes after changing from forward to reverse. I've checked the lug nuts; caliper bolts, brake pads, A-frame bolts, ball joints and all appear to be OK.

I have Herb's "Clunk Fix Washers" already installed, and greased the turn stops.

Still clicks!

Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

 

My 2000 does the same thing. I don't know what it is, but it hasn't gotten any worse with mileage.

I got the same thing, but only when I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right. I was told to grease the steering stops. Never got around to it, even after all the work I've done. I choose the ignore method.

 

I'm still clicking myself, I'm pretty sure its steering stops. I havn't gotten to grease them yet, but looking under the truck when its up on a lift, you can see the bare shiney metal where it was hitting.

Is it a clicking sound at the left front wheel when you slightly jerk the steering wheel left to right and worsens when steering wheel is turned all the way?? Like something is coming loose especially when coming to a stop? If so, when i went to Ford to have a diagnostic reading on my truck they replaced some steering arm that was located on the right front of my truck..It fixed my problem and also it fixed that notorious irritating clunking when you cut the wheel hard....I hear nothing anymore and very satisfied..The part cost me 181 bucks..I'll go back and find out exactly what the part is called and post it when i find it...

Just grease the turn stops and your problem will magically go away. I guess you'll get to it eventually... hehe.

Does your "click" only happen when you turn all the way left or right? If so, you are correct, just grease the stops; problem solved.

No, just when I change directions from forward to reverse or vice-versa, regardless of which direction the wheels are turned. It only happens when changing direction. My first guess was the caliper or pads, but I found no signs of abnormal movement.


Been under it twice now, still haven't found anything.
I guess it's time for a trip to the dealer...

 

i think it's your brake pads shifting slightly in the direction of rotation your applying the brakes to...the pads are slightly smaller than the caliper so it sticks a little then moves when the brakes are applied more....when i changed my pads out from stock ones i got the one click when applying brakes in either direction...anyway thats what it seems to be to me...
