Unhappy Changing a Flat

On Saturday, a crate came out of no where at 75mph and had no choice but to hit it strait on. To make a long story short, it split my front-driver side tire open and #@!$ up my front fascia.

Has anyone try changing a flat tire on there L? If you put the provided jack and the recommended point on the frame (Front) it will not go high enough to get the spare on... Anyone have this problem or am I missing something?

Thumbs up

I carry a piece of 2x8 about 10 inches long.
Provides more lift range and a bigger footprint in who knows what kind of surface you're on.

Can't help you out on the front, but I had a similar problem changing my friends rear right tire. Being the idiots that we were, we didnt put the jack far enough under the wishbone, so we were shy by about an inch. Not sure if the same applies for the front tires, but you could let out a little bit of air pressure.

Maybe the bottle jack in my '99 is different but, I noticed this was a problem right away and threw the piece of scrap wood in the back.
I would have thought that this would be even less of a problem for Lightnings and more of a problem for 4x4s.

If you have a lift kit and big ol' tires, you might as well throw the Ford jack away unless you're sportin' wood.

Just because someone can subnet the ***** out of an IP address or recite the OSI model off the top of their head, doesnt mean they can necessarily change a tire.

Heh ... agreed. Come to think of it, most techies I know have relitive mechanical knowledge to technical knowledge, as one goes up the other goes down.

Give me a break, I had to get my hands dirty, the spare sure collects allot of road grime being under there.

By the way, I am a real CCIE, actually I have two CCIE's. Routing & Switching, and Security.

Unhappy

I've had to do it 3 times on my '99. Twice front left (nail both times) and this morning the left rear. I've become an expert. Front is harder than rear (no jokes here!?) A block of wood is definitely a help to raise the L up high enough for the spare.

After my all-nighter flight, I exited I-75 onto Delk and started hearing a slight funny sound from the back. On Delk passing 41, it sounds louder and it IS coming from me. I run the left mirror down and there is some white smoke coming from the left rear Eagle F1 GS. As I get to the side and pull into a side road, it deflates with rubber spitting out of it! It looks like the sidewall just gave out. I couldn't find any tread damage. Maybe someone shot my tire out! 18k on it but 3 years old. They are due for new by the end of the year...guess I'll buy 4 for new ones all around.

Nothing like changing a truck tire in your uniform after being up all night. At least the 3-4 guys that drove past didn't help. It took 15-20 min and after wiping off the grease and blood from 3 cuts I was back on the road.......

I'll try C&D or tire rack to order 4....

Had my sidewall give out on my left rear tire a week ago - my wife and I heard a hissing noise that sounded like someone using an air compressor, while we're in line at a drive-through

LOL I didn't want to deal with it, called AAA, ate lunch, they arrived within 15 minutes, tire changed in less than 5 minutes, another 5 minutes of talk about the Lightning with the AAA guy, then on our way

I felt a brief twinge of guilt for letting someone else do it, but I did pay for AAA...

Tirerack has F1's for $189 right now BTW.

01 L here. The included jack gives me about 1/2 inch clearance to get my tire out.... I just followed the included instructions for the support points.

Don't laugh but about 3k miles ago, I was too broke to buy a new jack and didn't want to borrow one, so I did a front to rear rotation with the included jack and spare tire.

Bomeyer another Marietta L

owner, plus USAF(?). Hope you weren't in Class A's when changing. AAA as someone said is cheap insurance, plus good discounts on travel, etc. Someone in Mobile posted about friend who would sell F1's for 169, plus about $5 shipping up here. could post for him. INMHO might be time to consider 20" tires & wheels since you need replacement? Hope to see you around some time. BTW Team Ford on Cobb pwky close to Dobbines has great SVT tech Scott Levine.

Jake,

Howdy. I'm ex-AF. I wasn't in class A's, but just as bad (FedEx uniform; white shirt, tie, etc.). AAA sounds like good advice. Being up all night didn't help matters!

I'll check out C&D in Mobile ($163) and Tire rack ($189). I like the stock '99 wheels so I'll probably stick with those. Any advice on who to mount and balance? I like Butler tire, but don't know if they'll try to gouge me since I'm buying the tires elsewhere. I'll deal with it all after I get back from vacation. Untill then I'll need to drive around like a dork for one more day...

I use Team on Cobb also. Very happy with them. I met Jeff the other SVT tech and he did me right. I had the intercooler done, the clunk, plus a few other minor things. I'll talk to Scott next time, too.

Hope to see you out and about. Usually driving locally on Powder Springs, Delk, Atlanta Rd., and on Lockheed/Dobbins.

Thanks.

Yo Bo

You may have noticed that a number of guys got 20" wheels in same style as stock. Either chrome or satin, like ours. When my tires wear out, I'm going this route. Can't believe how much better truck looks with 2" largher wheels. Stock 16' on supra, went to 18"--all the difference in the world. BTW repro 20" offer good deals on tires as package, so will come mounted & balanced. Everyone says Gran Turisimo East does best mounting, balancing & alignment work. think they are on east side, but not sure. DON'T GO TO BUTLER TIRE, THEY ARE RIP-OFF ARTISTS. COULD TELL YOU A LONG STORY.
