I've been using a 10 mil clear aircraft vinyl on mine.. It's self adhesive and will work for about a year before it turns yellow, and has to be replaced. I have not cracked another lense since I started using it.
It's cheap and tough. They use it on the leading edge of airplane wings to prevent dings and abrasion.
