Question on fluids; ATF and Synthetic Motor Oils; plz help
I'm having my Factory Tech Valve Body installed this week, and I just bought a case of ATF at BJ's.......just wanted to make sure that DEXRON-III, MERCON is the correct fluid. Is this correct?
Also, I have about 5500 miles on the truck..........I was thinking of going synthetic on my next oil change.........What's the concensus opinion here.........I don't want the rattling noise some of you got when using synthetic early. Is 6K miles a good time to start using synthetic??
Thanks guys,
JC

JC:
I changed over to a synthetic ATF(Redline D4) about at about 20,000 miles. It's costly, but I think it will pay off for me. The Mercon is the right stock oil.
I don't agree that the eng. 'noise' some have is due to changing over to a synthetic eng. oil too early. I d/k what causes it but I don't believe that a 'better' oil will cause a problem of any sorts. I've used Mobil 1 since the 1970s in all sorts of vehicles including a 1986 Saab 9000 Turbo--you talk about an overextended eng.... I driver schooled it on the 2.5 mile Road Atlanta track and others. It finally 'gave up' at 300,000 miles(the last 50,000 miles driven by my teenage son)--it broke the motor mounts
but was still 'game!'
I changed to Royal Purple synthetic in my L at 4,000 miles with a K&N Gold oil filter and change it out at about every 5-6,000 miles. I now have 26,000 trouble/noise-free miles on 'her'. Use any of the quality(Mobil 1, Amsoil, Redline, or RP) synthetic oils and your eng. will thank you--many miles from now.
