Lightbulb My mod plan...your opinion wanted

Hey guys,

I'm an oldtimer here, but don't post much anymore...primarily b/c I've just been leaving the L alone for the past 24 months (owned it for 30).

This is classified as my "company vehicle" and I have enjoyed 25k trouble-free miles out of it. I do NOT want to roll the dice in a big way with it, as I have other vehicles to play with. IOW, this is not my primary "racing" vehicle. I plan to keep this truck a long time, however...and would like to see upwards of 100k miles out of the motor.

Here's what I have now: PSP air intake, chip, Trans-go shift kit. Stock it ran 13.95 @ 99mph, now it runs 13.2x@ 103+mph (F1 radials).

Here's what I have considered doing:

2 or 4psi lower pulley (thoughts on which one?)
90mm MAF (does this really help?)
SVO TB
Breather cap (yeah, I've got a bit of oil in the intake tube)
3.73 gears
Chip reburn for above

Does this look like a decent plan? I know I should probably do a complete exhaust setup, but I've decided not to. Maybe just a cat-back for some "noise", but I'm not gonna do headers or an H-pipe right now.

Will the above mods push me into the high-12s on stock F1s? 106+mph traps?

TIA,

Hey Wes,

Those mods should do it for ya.... Just for reliablity, I would go with the two pound pulley. I would also make sure to get a set of NGK TR6 plugs (or the Denso equivilent).

I also think that those mods should be pretty good for you. I agree on the two pound lower pulley, if you want to get 100k miles out of it the two pound should be fine, you might want to think about the new JDM pullies that you can change from like a two pound to the four pound in under 10 minutes. This way you can run the two pound for most of your driving and then when you go to the track you will have the option of adding two more pounds of boost in the matter of minutes. With the mods you listed it should bring you to a high 12 second run. And that should make you happy with it and also have it live a long time like that.

Wes,

Good selection, I would recommend staying with the 3:55s with F1s.

Bolt your PSP Filter and Adaptor right up to the 90 MAF. (Just buy the MAF & Boot)

reality, sure the 90mm MAF will bolt to the old PSP adapter, but why would you feed a 90mm with an 80mm diameter tube???? There is a benefit w/ the 90mm MAF, but don't choke it upstream. This will definitely negate the benefit.

Wes,

IMO I would just go with the 90mm MAF upgrade a 2# lower pulley and a chip reburn. The T/B is a waste of money in my opinion. The gears is up to you, you will not gain anything at the track and I doubt you'll notice the small change on the street. With those mods you should see ~106mph in the quarter and ET will depend on your 60's.

Great opinions, thanks!

You guys are saving me some money. That's a good thing. I appreciate the perspective...especially in light of what I want/don't want out of this truck.

Sounds like a 2lb pulley and 90mm MAF are solid upgrades. I will do the breather cap mod as well.

Sticking with the 3.55s given that I'll always be on F1 radials is probably a good move; something I'd considered already.

What about my PSP air filter kit? Joel makes a good point. If its too small, then I get no benefit from the 90mm MAF. Does Sal make one that works better with the 90mm MAF? Or just "jump ship" so to speak and go with JDM parts/chip reburn?

I personally have never seen the gains in the 90mm MAF. But if you want one, your old intake kit will work, but will be too small. Im sure you can work something out with Sal to get a 90mm adapter peice.

Sal has always treated me right in the past, and I like doing business with him.

I'd skip the 90mm and throttle body upgrade. Do the electric fan instead. Great mod imo

yeah the electric fan along with waterpump would be a good mod for what your planning. gives you a few hp, saves you some mpg, and drops temps.

Hi Wes
Good to see you around here again. My .02 on gears, I have had 4.10's in my truck almost since I first got it (may 00') So I am used to the way the truck is on the street. Its very quick on its feet so to speak and yes it has a traction problem but nothing an educated right foot can't handle.

Every once in a while I get to go for a ride in a friends truck ( Herb Jackson) and he still has his 3.55's and I'm always telling him to slow the damn thing down It feels like I'm in a freakin wiston cup car......top end unlimited. I don't know how you guys can drive those high geared things.

I would put some gears in it.....makes'em real quick feelin, and you don't have to worry about all that unwanted top end speed . Dale

Here is my opinion, or if I was starting over again.

Chip (you have that)
Filter (you have that)
JDM adjustable 4# pulley
Long tube JDM/Kook headers, cats & mid pipe and Bassani X-Cat back exhaust (love it)
90mm MAF
Breather cap

If that doesnt result in 12.50s to 12.80s add:

JDM Fan kit/water pump upgrade (very nice and looks stock)
Oval Throttle body (not much gain)
JDM/PI 2400 stall converter ( i realize you probably dont want to do this)

No reason to change the 3.55 gears.
Change to tr-5 or tr-6 NGK plugs

I am partial to JDM because in my personal experience I have seen the greatest gains in power with them and they have treated me very well. Sal and JL are also great and have had great sucess with these trucks as you know already. Happy shopping and I hope I helped some.

If you looking for a high milage with plenty of power for the street and real quiet so you can listen to the wife and the radio on the highway (assuming these are good things)

2# jdm pulley with cage
reburn the chip to leave the stock torque reduction and pressures on your daily driver side of the chip
home made boost bypass
breather cap
install a Buick 3.8 FWD electric fan or JDM setup
JDM traction bars (You will meed them at this point)
Fresh air to the air filter. I like the stock air box with fresh air supplied thru the bottom with a 3" tube (open up the fender hole if you are using it)
Piaa stock wattage headlight replacements
TR5 plugs (TR6 is too cold to keep clean at this level of mods)

skip the following. (unless you just like chasing tenths at the track)
90 mm anything (not worth the gain)
3.73 gears (expensive and only add to the traction problems on the street)
aluminum drive shaft
4 and 6 #pulleys (Blower rpm too high. chip needs to be there at this much boost, if you get a bad load of gas, pulley has to be removed with the chip, not just the chip if you have a 2# pulley)
160 deg thermostat (too cold for a street motor)
exhaust changes X pipes, Bassani, long tube headers
power coolers
drag tires

if you want mid 12's, add the above (except the drive shaft)

if you want low 12's, add

nitrus and pray for the rods (a big deal with the 01/02 computer)
if your truck is anything other than a 2000, change the computer to a cux2 (it is the most adjustable for the tuners)
drive shaft loop
you may be required by the local track to add a cage at this point

IMHO Andy
