changing rear end gears...anyone run into any problems???

Just as the subject says, I am swapping gears on my 2000L in about 2 hours and I just wanted to know if anyone ran into any problems with their's. Any problems with shims, noises etc. Thanks in advance for any info and/or help.

Never done it so I can't help with the 'mechanicals' but you may need a chip or a chip reburn(if you already have one) to correct the speed/odo.

I have a 99 that I had the Dealer install 3.73 gears and we had to order a shim kit for it other than that everything is fine no noise or vibration

Cool

I've done them since "62"..you will need shims. This is not something to try if you've never done it..Wrong set up,,,KABOOM..
Also, be prepare to torque 300-400 ft. pds for the crush bearing..

Ditto what the Hound said. Not a good project for the first timer. Not much different if you have done gears before.

Depends on how adventureous you are and if you have reasonable mechanical knowledge. Also, be prepared before you start, read all you can. There are several tools and measuring devices which you will need. This job can't be done without a bearing separator. Good luck in finding one. I finally found one at J.C. Whitney.

I had never messed with rear gears before and managed to do the 4.10's myself on my 4x4, both the front and back. Go slow and do all the steps you are supposed to do, measure backlash, measure pinion depth, read the contact pattern, etc. Expect to have to pull the pinion a couple of times to get the pinion depth correct. Hopefully you have a shim kit.

Good Luck

Lightbulb Gear change

Get this done by a pro, watch what they do and you'll understand why I'm giving you this advice, I had the same job done, and I'm glad I had my tuner do it for me,(JDM),later, John H.
