70's CobraJet vs. Lightning
70's CobraJet 429 vs. Lightning
Bottom Line, 70's CobraJet 429 wants to race for $500. I run 12.8 on stock tires, I believe he's got slicks. Im not sure of his mods, what do these things run with some bolt-ons or whatever common mods these things have. BTW He is like 16 years old. I think him and his brother put it together.
Thanks
Thanks

If its a 429 CJR or SCJ would mean its a Torino body if its a 428 its a Mustang. I, had a 429 CJR the r is for ram air aka shaker hood scoop. Mine in 1970 ran bone stock on polyglass gt tires if you can beleive f-70-14. The time was 14.02@102mph. In show room optional which allowed you headers and slicks. and what ever carb and ign work you could sneek LOL. The same car ran 13.01@105mph. Hope this answered your question.
Sorry for long answer. ARTIE
PS/ it was the only Ford I, know of that came from factory with a Quadrjet carb! and only the CJR model. The reason this is funny is it was produced by Rodchester carb aka GM. Great carb for tunning! SCJ had a Holley, and the plain 429 had an Autolite carb. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!! ARTIE

Either way, 428 or 429, with a set of aftermarket heads, a mid-rise manifold, headers, and a decent carb, you could be pushing close to 600 hp. If the block's rebuilt with good parts, you never know...could be a stroker out to 600-800 cubic inches.
Bottom line...if you don't know what he's running, it could be a 13 sec stocker, or a 9 sec killer. Run what ya brung!!!

It is Rochester Quadra jet .. I lived in Rochester for 20 years and the guys at the GM plant helped me fix my old 74 Camaro when it decided to stop running one day, right next to their picnic tables outside. One guy tells me how to fix it looking thru the chain link fence from 15 feet away. "Just twist that upper screw a couple turns out.... No the other screw....." Funny thing was I was running a Holley 650... LOL Brings back memories...

A friend of mine had a '70 Torino Cobra with a 429 CJ. It was completely stock with a C6 automatic and 3.91:1 gears and he ran it at Maple Grove Raceway a few times with the best times being 13.9x and 14.0x
Goodluck they're are some quickones out there ! I used to race the stockers 68 1/2 -70's with my 69 GTO-JUDGE but, i had alot of work done to it bored 60 over, stroked, lunati cam, headers, none of em ever got by me ! Later. Mike 00whteL
interesting I got my 70 428 cj mach 1 out a couple monthes ago. it would pass the stock 00 L at 80..... no match for my 99 L with a chip and rotors. the mach 1 hadn't been run for a while and needs a tune up and fresh gas..... my mach 1 has 3.25 gears holley carb..... so if its geared and tuned it would be a match.... could be interesting....
