Painted silver L grills, SAWEET!

Eric (crued) came over this sunday and we worked on the silver beast from 9:00 (he woke me up) til about 3:30 or so. All in all we did some much need mods to his beast.

Up first ont his thread is his newly painted grills!! Eric did the painting himself and it turned out pretty damn good if I say so myself.

up first is eric pulling the stock grill out of the shell so he could put in his new ones. (notice the rubber gloves, HEHEHEHE).

close up of the front end.

Finally it out!!! I'm sure the rubber gloves didn't help much with the removal process, HEHEHEHEHEH.

Look at that! a painted grill!

Looks so much better in person, trust me. But I think silver is the only color that this would look good on.

One last pic! Don't worry he's not rolling on 17 inch winter tires all summer, just until his chrome "OEM" 00 wheels get back from cali.

Richard,

You should paint yours. I would but I cut mine up to use the street scene grills.

That would look sweet on yours!

Nice job Eric, and thanks Killer for the pics.
I have been contemplating doing this to mine all winter.
You just convinced me to go for it.

Red face

I'm confused. Does that mean that the grey horizontal grilles are one piece with the piece that goes around the headlights?

No,not the 01-02's any way. Grills are seperate piece from the shell and bumper cover. They are sitting on the workbench!

Question

I know how this is going to sound but......The wife likes the Honeycomb better. Guess what that means! Are the 99/00 grilles a direct swap?

I used Dupont Chromabase paint from a supply company. Gave them year and color code, then gave me a pint of paint (along with a can of Dupont Chromabase Maker, which is a reducer and required). I cleaned them off with Dupont Plastic Prep. Final 5 coats are with Dupont clearcoat

I used a general purpose siphon feed spray gun to do the job. A much smaller gun would've been nicer, but it was free. My HVLP hasn't arrived yet. I didn't do any sanding, but would have gotten better results if i did. There's a few spots where I got a little too much paint and it made like a dimple. No 'Orange peel' which I'm very happy about. I also sprayed in a diry *** shop, so there's spots where dust is embedded in the clearcoat.

This was my first painting project ever. I'm happy with the way things turned out and I learned alot. Looks much better in person that in these pics.

Oh yeah, that's to Joe (RTKILLA) for helping me out as well as the use of his tools and garage. It's too bad he's afraid of latex gloves.
