Torque Converter Install
Torque Converter Install
My Yank Torque Thruster 3000 converter is going to be here today and it's supposed to rain this weekend...great time for an install.
I'm trying to decide whether to do it myself or have a shop do it. I have access to a lift, tranny jack, etc. Any comments?
For those of you that have done the install yourselves...how long did it take? Any special tools required? Any tips, hints, etc?
Thanks,

A big hint for installing a converter.
1) Get a piece of plywood or a 2x8
2) Lift the tranny up on the output shaft (set teh POS on the plywood to protect it) so that it's vertical
3) There are 3 "steps" it must make to be in, the ONLY way to be sure you have it seated is to run a straightedge over the bell housing, if the hub is below the bell, it's in.
4) If it's not "all the way in" very bad things will happen.
Hope this helps,
G

Being a long time member of the F-Body community, Yank seems to have a much better product than PI, plus Mike is a great guy to deal with. Being that the Yank just came out with converters for the L, I'm hoping the same is true here. The best part is that I have no doubt that Mike will stand behind his product no matter what. If there are problems or adjustments to be made, Mike will do what is right!!!
We recieved the first torque converter from Yank that they made for the Lightning. The install wasn't too bad, but we had access to a lift and alot of tools. It is streetable, but not something you would want as a daily driver. We never had a chance to try it at the track because we blew up a motor while showing off on the street with nitrous (Yeah, showing off to our own mechanic none the less). We have yet to put it back in, because it is going in with the new motor along with a few other new things to try. But befor it is put back in, we are sending it back to Yank to be tightened, so it will stall at 2400. 3000 is too much for a daily driver.
The mechanic mentioned we put 900Lbs of torque to the ground when dad punched the nitrous. Something about torque multiplyer or something...
