Sorry to be a *****, but ...

What's the status on fixing the <search>?

It's been a while, and there have been accusations of it being disabled in order to enhance new topic origination for sponsors. This can't possibly be the case, right?

Steve: if you need help with re-enabling it, perhaps somebody here is talented enough to assist?

Sorry, but we really do miss it.

Unhappy No Free Rides

To All,

As webmaster of the NLOC board, I know the problems that Steve has faced. I have followed Steve's quest for a solution to the "search problem", on the vBulletin user board. This is not a problem unique to F150online, but has also been haunting other boards as well.

We have not faced this problem to date, as our DB is not a large as the F150online....but we may see the problem in the future. Steve has been conversing with other vBulletin users, all over the world, and is still trying to solve the problem.

Just remember, that none of you pay for the right to use this or many other BBS's...pay and complain...if it is free...thanks that it is available!

Just had to vent

...Dwight...

BigD - alot of us have offered and are willing to pay.

If it's a problem that the database is to big, why not create some sort of archive? Say take all the posts of xx/xx/xxxx date, put them in a different format of archive, then delete them from this database. That would free up alot of space.

Even if each thread is turned into a HTML page that can't be added to, the info from each post need would be user id, date/time, and the post itself.

Even a mass delete/cleaning of useless threads in all the forums would help ease the size problem.

First off, to those that are accusing me of keeping search off in order to pad post counts to lure advertisers AND posting such drivel on other sites...

[frustrating tirade on]
YOU ARE CLUELESS AND IGNORANT IDIOTS. IF YOU THINK THIS IS THE CASE, PLEASE STOP POSTING ON F150ONLINE IMMEDIATELY!! YOUR COMPLETE LACK OF INTELLIGENCE IS DRAGGING DOWN AN OTHERWISE INTELLIGENT AND THOUGHTFUL COMMUNITY AND I HAVE NO INTEREST IN PAYING FOR THE BANDWIDTH YOU CONSUME.
[/frustrating tirade off]

Several weeks ago, a very generous effort was put forward on the Lightning forum to collect donations to help support the site. While the generosity of everyone that donated is sincerely appreciated, the sum total of the amount collected was not enough to cover the setup for an upgraded server.

Now, an update on that server. I have ordered an upgraded server with dual PIII 900's, 1GB of RAM and dual 18gb SCSI drives. I have all of the supporting software installed and hope to have the migration completed within a few days. This may mean some downtime. It also means that I am going to rebuild the search index on the new box. There are no promises that this is going to fix the problems that we have been having.

To those that have been patient and offered your ongoing support (and actually READ the thread I linked to so you could attempt to understand what has been going on with search), thank you.

More information on the migration will be posted later...

Steve

captainoblivious,

I think this is FANTASTIC idea and the solution that I wanted to use. However, this functionality is not built into this software and the "hacks" that are available are simply too amateurish to trust 600,000 posts to. I hope that the next version of this software will support archiving.

Cost isn't necessarily the issue, but please read my post above. This new server is costing about $200 more per month than the current setup. We have not signed up any new advertisers in quite some time and I have made no effort to do so, as I have been busy 1) looking for a job, 2) working on side projects that pay our family bills and 3) helping to raise a one month old child...so take a wild guess where that money is coming from.

Even a mass delete/cleaning of useless threads in all the forums would help ease the size problem.
Again, several weeks ago, we asked that a concerted effort be made in this forum to start posting in the appropriate forums. In part, this was one of the reasons. Doug and I still move dozens of threads each day and still get resistance when we ask people to comply. Removing threads would be much easier if people would respect this simple request rather than complain about it.

Once again, for those that think there is some hidden agenda to this, stop watching the X-Files and get into the real world. This site is run by an individual, gets no financial support from Ford Motor Company and is lucky enough to have a volunteer moderator that puts up with a great deal of bull**** because of his love for Lightnings. The site generates less than $2000 in revenue on a good month and costs almost that to keep the server up and running because of its bandwidth usage.

Steve - first I don't know anything about this database or your servers, with that said:

However, this functionality is not built into this software and the "hacks" that are available are simply too amateurish to trust 600,000 posts to
Not sure what you mean by to amateurish, but I trust your jugdement. I'd would guess all that would be needed would be something like a VB or C script that would read out of the database one thread a time, and pull out the information need from each post and convert it to HTML format. It's a lot easier to describe then to do, but something that shouldn't be that complicated for a decent programmer with proper planning. Though outside sources and time it would take would be a concern.

I wasn't refferening to moving them, I meant just straight deleting. There are probably many posts in the Lightning section alone from years ago that noone would ever look at. Really the only problem I see with that idea is the time it would take to look through all the back posts of all the forums. It may be to much of a hassle for whats it worth though.

Like you said, hopefully the next version will contain archiving. That would really help out.

sounds like my friends home pc

Dear Webmaster,

If you are accepting hardware donations, I may have something for you to sink your teeth into:

Athlon MP 1.2 GHz (2)
TYAN TIGER MP Motherboard

and some other neat stuff.

IDE drive quality is getting REALLY good, a trio of IBM 60 GB's + an Adaptec 2400 IDE hardware RAID 5 board (32MB cache) can be had for the price of a single 36 GB ULVD drive.
I love SCSI but it's rape on prices is soon to be over...

You could get a Promise Fasttrak TX2 and put together an inexpensive mirrored boot array together as well, plus a striped array for the swap file.

I am a Network Administrator, my help and support for F150Online is here if you need it.

JC

I build Linux boxes when I am not washing my trucks and Master of Pain is 100% right about IDE ... I built 3 fileservers recently with Promise FastTrak IDE RAID's and they each cost 1/3 of what I priced out a SCSI solution at. Performance is similar to SCSI U2W.

Thank you for the hardware offers, but we are using a "dedicated server" location, basically someone else's data center, someone else's bandwidth...and most importantly someone else's 24/7 technical support and monitoring (which I needed this weekend).

I have considered going the "colocation" route (someone else's data center, someone else's bandwidth, our hardware, but the data center would have to be located in Atlanta so I could access it anytime and they would have to provide bandwidth similar to our existing provider (Verio), but I have yet to find something comparable that would not cost more money.
