I teach autocross schools on occation. I have also raced a Acura rsx. They are an absolute blast to drive fast. You will love it. In autocross.. you stand on the gas till you get into trouble and then lift a little. (this only applies to that car) I missed the index by 1 sec on my first run for second out of 150 or so. The owner won the index in the same car. They are way cool. Just like a Lightning...Drive at your ability, not the cars ability and have fun.

Sounds like a great time! Have a blast.

Someday I'll go to driving school. So far, I've only been to traffic school a few times.

I spent 3 days in Phoenix at Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. You can expect to:

1. Learn a lot that you thought you already knew.

2. Have a blast.

3. Become a better driver.

4. Become more intolerant of the idiots on the road, who lack the most basic of driving skills.

Thumbs up

I haven't been, but would like to. We get like 20% off at Bob Bondurant's school just for buying a SVT. We only get a year to use it though.

thulsadoom,

I live 2 miles from the Bondurant school and one of my neighbors is an instructor of theirs. It's definately a top notch school, i've been on the track a few times. Bondurant is also an R&D location for Ford/SVT and they have some pretty interesting prototype vehicles.
Last time I spoke to my neighbor, he told me that Bob (Bondurant) had terminated his agreement with Ford and was negotiating for vehicle sponsorship. You might want to check into the status of the sponsorship before you go, to see what vehicles they will be using.

I spent a day at the Driver For A Day program at Shannonvile here in Ontario and will be attending again this June.

One day program with about 1 hour in the classroom and then some time on the skid pad. Next up was 20 minutes per car in each of a Boxter, 1999 Porsche Carrera 2, a 2001 Carrera 2, Porsche GTS race ready machine and then a 944 Porsche Turbo Cup car.

Each session on track you were accompanied by a true race driver/instructor who guided you around with an emphasis on driving at your own level. On each corner you tried something different to get the car to react and eventually you get the hang of it. Truly a blast. Even more exciting was that it was pouring rain. Quick way to get an understanding of understeer and oversteer. The concrete wall loomed really large!

Biggest thing that you will learn (I think) is the ability to see. If you are looking at the apex cone as you pass it, you are about two view points behind. It's weird at first but it starts to make sense. On the skid pad, we were taught to look out the side window, across the instructors chest when doing clockwise rotations. Interesting.

Have fun, there's lots to learn.

I was thinking about going to the Bondurant school that we got a discount for being an SVT owner. Still considering it, but there are a few good schools out.

The skip barber school looked pretty good, and broad range. Even though it was all Dodges, they have you drive in a Viper, Dakota, and Neon. To me thats better then learning on 1 type of car.

Hopefully this year I'll get to a school.

I took the 2 day course at Mid Ohio in June 2000 with my L. If you didn't want to use your own vehicle, they had modified Accords at the time. The first day was autocross, slalom, skid control, braking on a wet surface, and then the road course. The second day was all road course. You spent a portion of time running about 3 turns of the track, getting very familiar with the turns, and then moving on to another section. Then the last half of the day was spent running the full track. They said the third day would be spent getting even more familiar with the track - walking it, checking out the banking, etc, and then running it again. Mention my Lightning to some of the instructors. They will probably remember it. They included Calvin Fische, Chris Kniefel, Tony Kester, and Tommy Bryne. Have fun.

There are two problems with a school like Bonduran, imo. One is that they are very expensive, and the other is that you don't get to drive your own vehicle. I took the 2 day SVT school at California Speedway in March, and it was the most fun I've ever had in a vehicle. Toasting those Cobras on a road course in a pick-em-up was too cool for words. I got my competition license, which will allow me to run my truci on the road course in July. CSCC is putting on a two day solo2 driving school in May, and I definitely plan to attend. The SCCA runs regional schools at various tracks including Thunder Hill for very low cost and you get more track time than you would at Bondurant. Anyone who has not wrestled their Lightning around a road course is missing out on a lot of fun. Drag racing doesn't begin to compare.

.....100% agreement from this camp

Heard Kenny Brown mention this last time I was at his shop.

"I prefer for the adrenaline rush to last longer than twelve seconds"
