Hey Factory Tech: Tranny Gear Between 2nd and 3rd?

I'm sure everyone has noticed that if you give the truck about half throttle while taking a turn or curve in second gear that it will sometimes "downshift" into a gear that seems to be half way between second and third gears. Why does it do this? Is this like an "intermediate" gear? And does a chip effect the way this operates?

Thanks!

You call them torque converters, I call them Voodoo. Converters are a special and strange science that I only pretend to understand. Sometimes I think mine has about 7 gears. The way my tranny is built, teh lockup is much more pronounced and I feel every little thing, it's weird.
