"Real" Lightning by VIN...
"Real" Lightning by VIN...
I'm looking to buy a '99 Lightning and found one, but want to make sure it is real before I drive 300 miles to look at it. The VIN is 2FTZF0733XCA70729. Is it possible to tell if it is a "real" Lightning from the VIN? Also, is there anything that I should look for when looking at Lightnings?
Thanks,
Goose
Thanks,

www.carfax.com verifies that VIN as a real Lightning. Looks like only one owner as well (2 hits on it, usually means initial release and first title).

On all Fmco vehicles the 5th ,6th ,7th character in the vin denotes model.i.e. a w07 is a supercrew 2wd,an r10 is a ranger reg cab 2wd,a p74 is a cr. vic,p40 is a Mustang.and yes an F07 is a real Lightning.The 10th digit denotes the year.I only know all this 'cuz i'm a finance guru for a Ford Dlr.Hope it helps.
Well, actually 'F07' means F150 Flareside 4X2.
There are many non-lightning trucks with that in their VIN.
What I'd like to know is if the eighth position = "3" on all lightnings. That would be the easy way to tell as that is what denotes engine.
My non-Lightning 5.4L has an eighth position = "L"

95 Saleen S351,
I haven't seen it but, if someone made a movie about me there will be trouble because I haven't signed a release.
jaymz,
me too but, v8goose says he has a "3" which I hadn't heard of.
Can some lightning owners confirm a 3 or Z, in the 8th position?
Steve has a VIN decoder on the homepage and it recognizes "Z", I don't think he's set up to handle a "3" in the eighth and if it is legit he should know about it.
Thanks.

Nevermind, I called Ford SVT.
The eighth position for a Lightning is a '3', so that's all you have to know to determine the truck's validity.
(the 'Z' is a 5.4L bi-fuel motor)
Now I can bug Steve, (I love this part)
