Question Pulling power

I am wanting to trade for a 99 L (as you guys put it) and I will be pulling a trailer with 2 jet skis on it. The trailer loaded down with skis and fuel cans will weigh in at about 2000 lbs. I only pull one that heavy 1 time a year on vacation the other times it will weigh around 600 lbs.

I know that the truck has a lot of torque but will the s/c cause a problem with detionation(sp)? Will I just be able to change the plugs and be ok or is the L not a good idea at all.

Also does anyone know about a white 99 L from kentucky with a ARE bedcover and tail fin? That is the truck I am thinking about getting??

Thanks

JR

Question Talk About Towing!

I saw a yellow L towing a Gooseneck Trailer with a 67 camaro on it in Portland OR!! Anyone know who this is. I was impressed. It did not even squat the rear end, probably bagged.

Lightbulb Towing

Due to my lack of IQ by not researching this a little better I have found the answer at superchips web site

Flip Chip for Ford Lightnings
Cost: $400.00 (plus shipping)
Important Note: There are two programming options available on the Flip Chip for Ford Lightnings.

The Towing & Performance combination has a program on Side 1 that allows for towing up to the Lightning's 5000 lb. tow rating, while Side 2 has the full performance program.

That answered my questions.

Well guys wish me luck I am heading off to test drive it in the morning. I might be a regular addition to this board.

P.S. Does anyone here ride jetskis.

i pulled a jet ski, a bed full of luggage, and a friend from north louisiana to orange beach, florida with a single program superchip in the truck.. no pinging at highway speeds.. (70-100) only got 15mpg tho.. ugh.
a flip chip will do you just right.

My 2000 L is my tow vehical And I tow alot.

97 Yamaha standup
97 Sea-Doo xp Superstock 140hp
92 Polaris (all three on one trailer) about 2500 lb
95 Bayliner 20 ft skiboat, about 5000 lbs
a racecar 800lb A-mod autocross car, about 4000lb
A Neon racecar, about 5500lbs on trailer

One hint, Keep the tonge weight light. (about 200 lbs)

If your truck is stock, you have no problems. If you want a fantastic flip chip that will let the transmission suvive, get JDM to burn the val3 program setup for your year. Tows on side one, goes on side two. Stock shifts on both sides.

Hope this helps

I'm thinking that the L can easily pull those two jetskis; what I'm worried about is it's ability to pull everything up and out of a really slippery boat ramp. I use the Tundra to pull my single jetski, and sometimes I'll pull my friends 5000 pound Sea Ray boat with it (I've never towed with the L). It only has 245 hp, but easily pulls those machines with no problem.

When I'm pulling out of a boat ramp, I'll sometimes experiment to see if I can pull out in 2wd, instead of 4wd. Some boat ramps, when they're steep and covered with moss/mud, can be a real pain, and if you only have 2wd, you'll have a heck of a time getting out. I know some guys will weight down the bed (with an L, don't go over 800 pounds combined tongue and payload wet), to get aditional traction in a 2wd truck. If you do get in trouble, usually other guys around will help pull you out, but it's embarrasing when you hit the accelerator and actually go backwards! I've had to jump in the back of several trucks to help weight down the bed to get traction.

Jet skis are like motorcycles on water. I've had my STX up to 56 mph indicated, and that's flyin' when you're on water! I want to get a marine GPS unit to see how fast I really go. It's so much more fun to 'street race' out on a big lake, since there are pretty much no speed limits, lots of wide open spaces, few park rangers, and generally less traffic to deal with. It's the only place you can run a machine wide open for long stretches at a time. My buddy has a 1200 cc Yamaha Waverunner, and when we race, it takes him about two miles to pass me! Jet ski season is almost here!

When I was stock I towed with my bike in the bed (CBR600) and a drag car (88 Monte Carlo) on a trailer behind me. No problems, towed good....

Thumbs up Towing skis

Hey guys thanks a lot fot the info. I will be driving the truck today. I live in southern Illinois. but the truck is from western Ky. I think??

I asked about jet skis because of the up coming jet jam in lake cumberland Ky. It is a 3 day event that has tons of jet ski stuff and 300+ jet skis there. You can check it out at http://www.allpwcs.com I ride a 01 yamaha superjet freestyle machine and have a garage full of them. (that is what I hear about from the wife).

I will keep in touch If I get it I will have to change my name HEHE

I use to two three dirt bikes ranging from 250-350 lbs each. thats probly not as much as your towing but i could barely fell the difference back there. im sure you will be fine as long as you dont tow anything too outrageous. afterall the lightning is a truck right?
