HID fog lamps?
HID fog lamps?
Our 2001 foglamps use a 9005 bulb, correct?
Has anyone replaced these with true HIDs? (http://www.hidkit.com)

I think you meant:

I don't think the 2001's are 9005's if I remember right, though the bulb they have is similar.

It sounds like the 99-00 models, with the glass fluted lenses from the Mustang, etc, use H3s.
The 01-02s, with the clear plastic lenses, use a "9145" bulb. It is 42 watts. The 60W 9005 bulb, which is the highbeam for many cars, will fit as a direct replacement.
fwiw- I don't know if the additional wattage (42W vs 60W) will accelerate cracking. We still don't seem to know exactly why is happens.

I knew the 9005 is a compatible bulb shape, but I knew it wasn't the bulb... as snoopy points out.
You put a higher wattage in, prepare for cracking.
I have a 2000, so mine are H3's...

Where can I pick up some 9005's ?What brand name? How much $?Just "plug & Play"?Thanks for the help!
i.e. you can find them just about anywhere. I've seen them at KMart, WalMart, Autozone, Pepboys, Trak Auto, Ace Hardware, etc. They have them in normal colors, as well as those blue tints that seem to be all the rage.A couple of things to consider:
1. I don't know which way the filament is aligned and located in the 9005s. Filaments are not a point source of light, and the designers of the reflectors take the filament direction and location into consideration when they design the fog lamps. If the filament is pointed the wrong way (ie front-back instead of right-left) it will significantly affect the beam pattern and overall efficiency of the fog light. The 9005s might be the same - just something to check.
2. You are putting 43 percent more energy into the fog lamp housing. Assuming the same light/heat ratio between the original and 9005 bulbs, you are also putting in 43% more heat. There is a strong suspicion that the fog lamp lens cracking is caused by a hot lamp being cooled suddenly by rain or a splash of water. If this is the case, you will experience lens cracking much sooner than you would otherwise. Also, we don't know what the housing is made of. It might also be more fragile to heat.
I'd love to be able to simply swap out the bulbs for some higher wattage ones, like I do on my motorcycles. But the lens cracking issue still has more worried.
If you do decide to go ahead and blaze this trail, by all means PLEASE keep us all informed of the results. If it works out - GREAT!!!
I use to run 130W Piaa's with no cracking, just an occasional blown bulb. Time will tell with the 01's and higher output wattage bulbs. I just ordered some "hot" bulbs for mine
PS...I don't drive my truck when it rains, not that I care, but I have a work car! This is not to say my truck hasn't been in the rain, I just don't drive it when I know it's goin rain
