hi gang ,can our stock 2001 lightnings outrun one of those Grand Nationals? i beat one tonight on a rolling start = 35mph,but it was close ,we shut down at 129.00mph , came upon traffic had to brake both of us ,but i did notice the faster we got =mph the more i was pulling away!i know the grand nationals are quick this one was, i am bone stock= a k&N panel and a 2.5 inch ram to bottom of stock box is all i have,i did notice headers underneath, the GN .

I think that there where 2 versions of the GN.
One bad and one a little bader.
GN and a GNX?
Anyway for a couple of thousand $ a gen2 will never, never, catch a fairly modded one. Something like mid 11's on street tires.
Then there's always an 9 sitting around.
This is the typical car to ADVOID AT ALL COST!

I guess you'll win some, and you'll lose some, but you'll probably lose more than you'll win. Nonetheless, it's always fun to find out!! HEHEHE

No,No,No, The GNX did not come with a 305. It was the same 3.8 that the GN had-with the turbo, except it had slightly more hp. In addition, the 89 TA also had the turbo'ed 3.8 but the heads were different. Pontiac claimed 250hp but the car actually had 301. It was, and still is a cardianl sin for any GM product to have more hp than the vette, and the vette in 89 had 255, hence Pontiacs 250 rating. They only made 1500 TA's but if you run across one of these, BE CAREFUL! Stock times--0-60=4.4, 1/4=13.5. This one has 24 pounds of boost and runs 11.80's at 118 and thats on street tires spinning through first and second. They are all white and will be badged with TurboTA emblems.

Thanks! Actually it came with the Roush package. However, I recently ordered the same hood from Stylin Concepts for my 2002 HD. It is a functional Ram Air hood made by Good Hood. It cost $589 and the optional Ram Air kit is $109. The ads in the magazines don't do the hood justice.
Buick Grand Nationals
After doing a little research, this is what I've discovered concerning the GNs and the GNXs........
The GNX was an ACS/McLaren modified version of the GN and was made for only one year, 1987. Total units produced was only 547, so running across one on the street is quite unlikely. Most are now collector or museum show cars. The GNX cranked out 300HP and could cut low 13s in stock trim. The GN was rated at 265HP and was good for mid-13s in stock form.
In other words....if you see one, Go for it! The GNs aren't any faster than the current crop of F-bodies GM is making now and I can run door handle to door handle with any stock WS6 or Z28 out there with my stock 2001 L. If it's a 6-speed and the driver makes a mistake, he's toast.

The Buick motors and 89 TA are much faster than the new F bodies if moded correctly. These cars responded incredibly to openeing up the head pipe and exhaust. In addition the chips for these things can be purchased for as little as $25, and can be daily drivers with 24 pounds of boost! Not to mention that I have never heard a better turbo sound than what these cars make.

GN's have been around since 1986 and the GNX since 1987. I beg to differ with you , these are to be approach with caution. you are unable to tell the difference between and Stock or Modded one and they will fly. As old as they are , It would be safe to say that the owners are up to par on the mods scene as we are.
and yes I have seen Nitrous on them also.
The GNX can be spotted on the street , they have the Mesh style 16 inch wheels in a black honeycomb, also a set of fender vents. that was the main visual difference other than the GNX badges. They were a conversion for Buick , Like the Syclone was a conversion for GMC.
The 89 Turbo TA had the GNX motor nothing different than the GNX. They were the leftover engines. The TA was said to have faster times due to a lighter weight.
I will race anything but I do approach these with care. I have drove all 3 and know what they do , modded or stock
You can tell the diference in the GNX and regular GNs.Although the stock GNs run in the hight 13s,that is usually burning at least 200 feet if not most of the track.I have noticed though with age, unless pampered from day one as well as maintained,Most that are still kicking around are sluggish and tired.People with nice ones are restoring them or locking them up in garages. The GNX is VERY limited as one said but they have different fenders and grilles.Ive never seen one on the street and probally wont but Car and driver did a comparison and its more than just HP.the GNX has a different turbo all together. The TA is also a fast car and it is very hard to tell between a gta but if you look closlesy at the emblems,They say Turbo not GTA but look very similar.
I remember back in 87 when they were the fastest production car for that year,i saw them running 13.9s burning up the track.....
they are very easy to turn up the boost.

RUNVS,
I know you just read that off of some site but it's total BS about the the track times. The part about the numbers built and such are correct. My wife owned an 87 GN for 6 years so this isn't hearsay. I talked to Mark Heffington (the owner of Hypertech) several times at the track and he owned 2 GNX's besides his stable of GN's. A stock GN would turn 14.7 at the Memphis Motorsports Park. A stage 3 chip (boost went from 12.4#'s to 16.4#'s) , 160 stat and test pipe (no cat) would put you around 13.9 running 93 octane. The GNX had a turbo with ceramic impellars that was suppose to spool up faster and had more boost from the factory. It had 16" wheels and I think better springs. They by no means turned low 13's from the factory. Heffington brought one of his GNX's to the track one time and I talked to him about the difference in performance. He said once you chipped them both that his GNX might have been about a tenth quicker but it was almost too close to call. The Turbo TA was faster than both of these cars from the factory. So much for that urban legend about GNX's.
The GN's can run killer times with more bolt on mods and octane. There was one at the track running low 11's last year.

Stock, a new 01 should take a GN. But try finding a stock GN, HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.
One guy I work with has a GN and this car is one of those pampered sleepers thats just insane fast!!!!!! Tuned properly they just run so smooth and the turbo's do sound so sweet! I would think twice about racing his GN with my truck this year. Now next year, thats a whole new ball game.
Sal could take um!
