How do you calculate estimated boost?

How do you calculate estimated boost?

I read where people buy a 4# lower and 2# upper and so on. How do you know what your boost should be. Does this give you say 6# of boost above the stock boost. Is there a formula you use to calculate it based on the size of the pulleys? Thanks for your help.
