Angry Removing drive shaft, PAIN!

Ok so I'm pulling my trans out in a couple days and slowly I've been doing other mods and replacing stuff here and there.

Well I was going to pull the driveshaft out and these 12mm bolts are killing me! I've broke two wrenches trying to get these out and no go. I've let them sit with penetrating oil on them, I've tried heating them up with the blow torch and nothing, notta a damn movement from these bolts. I've put a 3 foot extention on the end of the wrench to get some more leverage (thats what broke the wrenchs). Snapped them right in half! good craftsmen stuff too!

Does anybody have any suggestions. I'm tired of going to sears with broken tools, HEHEHEHEHEHE. Thank god they replace them. The only other thing I can think of is drilling them out, but come on is that crazy or what!

Can u get Kano Kroil? Best penetrant I ever used. We used it in power plants for stuck fasteners.

I went thru the same thing on my Mustang a few years ago. Ford uses loctite on those for safety. I also bent two open end wrenches. Just keep at it, they eventually come loose.

Wink

Damn, it sounds like you are having a tough time. I hope you get it, did someone use lock tight? If so you can try heating them again and you will need to shock the bolts, give them a quick tug, once they move they should be able to go the rest fairly easy. I have had mine out a few times and I do use lock tight and have had no problems. Good luck, I hope you get them soon.

A couple of things to try.

1) Use ONE wrench and a floor jack under the wrench to turn it.

2) Drive to exhaust shop, or any shop for that matter and get them to impact them loose, then snug em a little and baby it home.

Good luck
Jeff

I just removed mine a second ago. I used a breaker bar to loosen and the rest of the way with the impact. The impact wouldn't budge the bolts! That is from a 2001 that the dealer had rotated a couple of times trying to get rid of a vibration. I had no idea how light those drive shafts are. WOW!

Snap on makes a set of 3/8 drive metric 12point impact sockets that are made for Ford vehicles. I bought a set and have never had a problem getting a shaft out, (with the use of an impact GUN and a reducer). I don't remember the cost of the set.

My impact is a pretty strong and it wouldn't touch them. I went ahead and tried heating them up more and on accident I caught my truck on fire. So I have to get the bed repaired now, I have no clue what thats going to cost.

the good news is that I got so pissed that I broke the bolts loose and I got the shaft out.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, I wonder how many of you guys believed that fire!? No i did heat them up for a LONG time, about 10 minutes each and they came loose finally! What a pain though.

I think it is pretty funny we are taking off the driveshafts at the same time, and replacing the trannies with Factory Tech replacements.

BTW, my Ingersol-Rand nice impact gun wouldn't remove the bolts either. I evemn bumped up the air pressure alot.

What Dr.D said...Kano rules!!! My father owns an outboard shop and its like the whole place comes to a screeching hault (no pun intended) when we run out of the stuff. They make kano kroil, aero kroil, all sorts of different variations, but it works great.

If you heated them up that long, don't re-use them.
