Angry Blown Engine, AAARGH!!

No not me yet, and I hope it doesn't happen.

I heard a couple of JDM tuned Lightning trucks blew their engine at NMRA in Bradenton, FL last weekend. Anybody got any info on that, I was waiting for someone else to post it, but I haven't seen a thread. How did it happen and do you know why??

Probably increased PSI (pullies) teamed up with a race-program. I'm guessing the "average" thresh-hold would be 4lb pullies... It would be interesting to get some statistics on what the PSI was on the engines.

A few weeks ago, someone surmised that JL trucks were blowing motors. Next month it will probably be PSP's turn.

I don't think any of the tuners are "causing" blown motors. More boost = more stress on cheap-*** rods.

Hey,

I'm not trying to spread rumors. It sux when someones engine blows. I have some eye witnesses at NMRA at Bradenton, FL that said two fast JDM tuned trucks blew their engine, but they didn't know their names. IF it was JL, PSP, Pauls, Swanson, etc. I would ask about their trucks also. Not picking on anyone specific.

I think you guys are right, I was told by a SVT Engineer at FFW in Orlando, more than 2 Lbs of boost over stock, the rods may blow. We mod our trucks, We take chances.

It's not the chips, it's mechanical issues that are causing the motors to blow. However, there were a couple JDM tuned trucks that blew their motors at the NMRA event.

I was at Bradenton, and I know for sure one truck blew, I talked to the owner, the other truck I only heard about from other people there.

I met the owner of the truck that blew while we were in the tech lanes. He told me his truck just had a filter, JDM tuned chip and the nitrous. He showed me his dyno sheets, and when I saw how much power he made, I asked what hp he was running and he said a 175 shot. I told him he wouldn't be running that for much longer, then heard the motor went south later on. He came by after that to discuss doing some lower end stuff.

Yes the truck had a JDM chip, but in his case, it's obvious the motor went from too much n2o on a stock bottom end. Like I said, the other truck I have no idea, I never even saw it race.

I believe the correct response would have been 'and your engines still running????'

It does suck when anyone blows an engine.

N20 = BAD, BAD, BAD

Leave that gas alone on a stock bottom end. I have a 6# on mine and has been running well for 2 1/2 months, no issues.

It was 2 trucks, one was a blue 02 and one was a NOS truck, both JDM tuned. One truck had been tuned on the dyno by JDM only one week before it blew!!

i dont think the tuners are at fault,if you are dumb enough to put 13,14, or 15 lbs of boost thru this motor stock then you deserve a blown motor!!period!!

Thats true, we ask them for more and more power!! It was just sad that everyone tried to point fingers @ JL when he had a few trucks let loose! There are tons of L's around using many different chips. It just seems noone wants to post about other tuners trucks letting loose. I have seen about the same # of all the tuners trucks let loose!!

I second what SVT360 stated. The tuners are not to blame unless they're twisting your arm and feeding you lies that you won't break anything, just to make a sale. And even in that case, the truck owner should be doing his/her homework. Buyer beware, right?

Now as for homework. I've been kind of reluctant to do much performance tuning due to all of the horror stories of blown engines, rods, etc. I'm asking from experience from you all here. What do you think of a Diablo chip with a SHM 2.80" blower pulley? I guess I should change my plugs as well. Am I looking at trouble with boost/rod issues there? I don't want to go too crazy. But I was told from a local speed shop that the setup there would be all right. How much boost would I be acquiring? You don't increase boost with chips or electronic mods, right? I'm kinda new with modding S/C engines. So I'm still a little green with this boost increase issue. Thanx guys.
