Hmmm... tranny trouble? (hey factorytech)

I've noticed that while aggressively accelerating in second gear, I feel what appears to be the transmission slipping... more noticeable after the car has just warmed up than when the car is thoroughly warmed up (either case... the motor is in operating temp).

I haven't noticed the RPM's to see if it's truly slipping but I may not even be able to see it on the tach read out.

Best way I can describe it is this... if you had a manual transmission and you depressed the clutch ever so slightly while accelerating. You can hear the motor pickup rev's but it only last a fraction of a second. Sometimes it happens more than one and other times just once and when thoroughly warm, almost never.

Any one else like this? Fluid level is spot on but there is residue on the dipstick...

I hate to say it... but it looks like its time to either rebuild it or have it replaced....

Ideas??

Interemediate clutch plates are prolly going out, I see this a lot on the rebuilds I do, the Interemediates are definitly the weak link. How many miles?, Mods?

Is this the 2001 diode deal? I thought that was not an L issue.

The mods are minor... I have a Diablo chip (many times I have read your replies about this) and ram air... that's it.

After reading your comments regarding chips and the transmissions, I called my Ford dealer and told them about this. The reason I did this is that they installed the chip and told me about it before I bought the truck new. Their comment was not to worry about it and that it wouldn't affect the tranny. Oops.

Obviously, that's a whole other issue.

Bottom line, do I rebuild it with a better set of clutches or let Ford replace it.

I will have the chip reburned taking any logic out for the transmission and going with your line valve body once a direction is determined.

The TSB is for the build dates of the "second" mechanical diode, the improved version. This would only apply to transmissions that are model code 1J, not the 5X models. The 1Js are pretty rare, only aobut a thousand of them were ever built. Some of the diodes have failed, I guess, regardless they did change the design, so the TSB is for the ones with Diodes. Of the original (non-improved) diodes, there were no lighting transmisions built of that model (5Q) the problem was identified before the L's started production in 2001 MY.
Rick, you'll have to email me about your tranny, I cna't really get into it on a forum.

The only thing 1J left in that transmission is the tatoo on the case, it's been "slightly modified". The core I used for that was from a 2000 Van, got the core cheap, gutted it, and viola!

Hope you like it.
