What should I do about my rear end leak?

Since my poertrain warranty is voided ford will not fix it for me. The left axle seal, i believe is what its called, is leaking. Can any repair shop do this for me? How much will ford charge me to have them fix it?

thanks

Preparation H! Just kidding. Seriously this is something you could probably do yourself with a half decent shop manual.

Its a simple job, really.Pull off wheel, pop off center cap, pull out cotter pin then nut, bearin g and disc assembly.Seal is inside disc assembly.Total job should be 1-1.5 hrs tops. Part should be 5-12 dollars. Any shop could do that for around $85 Its a pretty straight foward job.

i'm confused. I think his leak was from a rear wheel seal or axle seal, which involves pulling the diff cover, removing the pinion shaft and bolt, then pulling an axle shaft out and replacing the seal.

still a fairly simple job, but no cotter pins are harmed in this repair. i think Mondo was talking about the front end.

later,
chris

the leak is where the wheel goes on the axle, its not in the middle near the diff

I know that.

you still have to pull the diff cover and drain the gear oil and pull the pinion shaft and remove the axleshaft to replace that seal.

think about it, it is a circular seal in the axle housing tube end, the axle shaft goes right through the center of it, how can you remove that seal without taking the axleshaft out first?

am I on the same page or am I misunderstanding you?

sorry to hear about your warranty, but like the others said, that is pretty sketchy, did your local dealer try to tell you that or did Ford Motor Company? just curious.

later,
chris

i dont quite understand what your talking about but im sure your right since i dont know much about the rearend.

the guy at the service desk at the ford dealer said that we found evidence of a chip. whatever that means. i wasnt there so i dont know exaclty what he said. but im not old enough to fight it and my mom doesnt know enough to fight it herself and she says she doesnt want to go throught the whole process. doesnt matter now. sal is building me a new engine as I type.

evidence of a chip, what BS, I'm sorry to hear about that. Glad to hear that you've got a new engine in the works though.

send me an e-mail if you've got a minute, I'd be curious to know if Ford really marked your VIN with a voided warranty notice. I should be able to find out in about 30seconds with the right info.

Did you not post you had a knocking noise in the motor and was going to take it back to the dealer for a fix? However, you and your friends went for a ride on the "Lightning Side of Life" and the motor then let go before it ever made it back to the dealer?
If that is correct... someone may have read this board and was ready for you when came in to a dealer.
