No excuse

I didn't read the boards all weekend and then I start reading some of the posts. I take a great interest in what is going on with the 2001 model year Lightning because I have one. I notice that a couple of Lightnings have ventilated their blocks this weekend.
Late last year when there were a few people blowing there 2001 Lightnings running 4-6lbs of boost I think it was a learning experience. Now with at least 10 or more that have blown 2001's running higher boost than normal it is almost inexcusable. I know that most on the board don't complain when there engine blows, but I can't believe they wanted it to happen. Anyone that has a lower or upper pulley has got to realize that failure is probably right around the corner (if they have a stock engine). Is it that the 2001's are weaker engines than the 99 & 2000's or are more people abusing the 2001's?
I don't mean the flame those who have blown their engines, but for heavens sake, if you have a 2001(stock block) with a supercharger overdrive pulley take it off(unless you have a buddy at a Ford dealer who will replace your engine no questions). A blown engine will cost you abou $5000 at a dealer to replace just the short block. If you want a modified engine it will cost you much more than that.
Just my $.02

It would be nice to have somewhere that we can see TRUE SOLID data regarding blown motors, years, mods, etc. Also, what is meant by a "blown motor". Is that just a bent valve, or broken rod, crank, block, etc??? What is it exactly that is breaking when the motor is so called "blown"? I will be putting on my 4# pulley, chip, plugs, and boost bypass this weekend, yes, i've seen the blown motor posts of the past. I've personally had to have 3 motors rebuilt (2 M3's and one MX6 turbo) but i believe they were all my fault. If i have all JDM tuned equipment, should my motor really blow????

I think easterisland is refering to blocks that have basically grenaded, a rod fails and parts of it shot through the block and damaged other rods, basically damage that needs a new block and internals to fix, ie. new engine. You should be fine with just a 4lb pulley, most of the ones I read it has been combinations of upper and lower pulley's and closer to 6+lbs of boost before a rod failed. Just to be safe and make sure the spark plugs are in there and they tightening properly. This will help everything out as well as eliminate the spark plug getting shot through the head.

Honestly I don't feel it's an issue with 01 motors. I keep hearing everyone talk about blowing motors as strictly an 01 thing, but there's a ton of guys that have blown up 99-00s as well. I think the thing that makes it appear as more 01s is, for one, that they doubled production of 01s so there's more of them, and two, it's just since the 01 model year that people have been making seriously way more power with these motors.

Thinking back, almost all of the 99-00 motors I know of that have blown, were blown on nitrous. There were no people running tons of extra boost like currently. Now that that kind of power is obtainable without nitrous, more "non-nitrous" trucks are blowing up.

I don't really think it's a matter what block you have, but more a matter of your power output. Seems to me that the motors kicking rods are all over the 500 rwtq mark, whichever way they used to get there.

Of course I could be totally wrong and there could be problems with the 01 blocks. I'm just speculating at this point based on my observations.

As with anything, "you gotta pay to play" and i think anyone running much higher boost with a pulley and chip, or even just a chip, you're risking going higher than the stock parts/motor were meant to handle.

Me? I'm going to risk it, have a blast with it, and cross my fingers when my foot is through the floor!!! If it blows, i'll get a part time job at Checker... but i just can't have a car/truck and not modify it!!!
