Parts needed to rebuild motor w/ broken rod

Well I put on the new slicks and QA1 shocks and headed down to the track. My wife came with me to watch some low 12 high 11 runs. What she got was a 13.6 run and a blown motor at the 1/8th mile.

This brings me to my question:

I will be rebuilding the new motor (with some help) with all the goodies and making sure this will not happen again.

Where is the best place to purchase a block and what is the part # for a 2001 block?

I would like to use Manley rods, does anyone know the part # for them?

What pistons is everyone using, with part #s if avail?

What head gaskets, ARP studs and or anything else I may need that will beef up the engine (part #s would be great)?

I know some people are going to a different valves, can anyone tell me what they are using?

Thanks for any help. Now I need to go out and look for a junker to drive until I get the L back together.

Will be taking some pics of the damage soon. I will try to keep everyone posted.

Tommy, I can supply you with all the needed parts, and even a built shortblock if you like. Feel free to give me a call if you want to discuss.

Tommy:

I truly admire you my friend.
You have a 2001 L, fairly well modded and you want to get into the 11's and you do what you have to do to get there. Spent ~ $30K for the truck plus the mods.

Then, it broke, big time.

No bitching, no complaining, just OK how do I build the motor over again so this perhaps won't happen next time.

I like your attitude. I do wonder, though, if your wife shares in your quest for speed or times when it costs rather a lot out of your pocket to get there.

My own '99 is not specced anywhere near yours, about 360 at the rear wheels on the dyno, and I don't race at the track and rarely on the street. I just like good all around performance.
When I take the truck in for service, I never remove/change anything. Thank goodness all of my problems have not related to modifications to the engine, but if it became an issue I would not complain and just say thanks I'll fix it myself.

Hope you get into the 11's soon, which is pretty dadgummed awesome for a truck with the aerodynamics of a brick and the weight of an elephant.
Bill

tommylightning, you should try talking to Jim @ JDM. He has worked directly with Manley and put together a pretty sweet kit.

Some info and some great photos can be found @ http://www.nloc.net/forum/showthread...threadid=11626

best of luck . . .

I second that.

I'm also seeing a pattern with the 01's breaking their rods. And this truly worries me. And I would like to know, was your truck acting any differently than normal?? If there are things you don't want to say online, then feel free to e-mail me.

Tommy Sorry to hear about your motor.

I agree with Flash about giving JIM a call, he has all the parts you need in stock. He even has a nice seasoned 2001 block you could use(mine) or he has a few brand new blocks at his shop.

Smile Hey man....

What exactly caused your motor to blow???

Were you running too much boost, or did it just give???

Seriously,
Thanks

It's those pesky pullies!@#

at least when people are busting rods, they are being forced to upgrade their internals, which in turn = better development for our trucks!!

Thanks for all the replys so far. My wife was a little upset but just wants to see the truck back up and running again. As far as how many broke, I am not sure at this point. Will be purchasing a manual and pulling the cab this week. Should have some pics and more info later in the week. I will try to call JDM and Sal today to find out about parts and the block. Need to look for a junker today to get me around until the L is fixed.

My feeling about the whole thing is that Ford should have put in stronger rods from the factory but how can I complain. I am making a very heavy truck run 11s in the 1/4.

You don't have to pull the cab to get the motor out. Just remove the supercharger, and all the front accesories, and it will come right out.

Question

Can anyone tell me all that's involved in changing your pistons and rods? Is it just a "simple" swap? Or do other things have to be done to the engine, rebalancing, etc. ?
