Question Deep Sump Tranny Pans

With everybody adding the larger tranny pans from the 4X4, I was wondering if anybody has come across a larger tranny pan with a drain plug and an opening for a trans temp gauge?

Just a rhetorical question:

If you add a tranny gauge and the temp goes up, how is the gauge going to help you?

Lightbulb Tranny temp gauge

I would think that after installing the temp gauge, and getting used to a particular "normal reading", that if you saw a higher than "normal reading", as what might happen during severe duty such as "drag racing" or something as simple as "towing", you might want to try something like "take it easy". The gauge is a great idea and simply lets you know when it's time to chill a bit, John H.

What happens if you add a tranny gauge and the temp goes down, how is the gauge going to help you?

If the temp is low...take it easy till it warms up. Checking the fluid level is more accurate when it's actually at normal operating temp.

So, let's say the temp is 160 to 180 degrees driving normal. And let's say it's always about 200-210 when you tow something, drag race or road race. What would you do different other than shrug your shoulders and say "yep, that's what the tranny temp is."

Don't get me wrong. , there's nothing wrong with having the gauge. I don't think you'll do anything different because you know what the temp is.

Your right Spike, but Iam thinking of adding the single gauge column pod and needed something to fill the hole So I thought why not a trans temp! Already have a/f gauge, fuel pressure and an addition boost gauge

That's a good reason and I can't argue your point - it's cool looking!

On the side of the tranny there is a test pressure port that makes a good place for a tranny temp gauge, just yank out the pipe plug and the 1/8 NPT sender should screw right in. Now, this is not the most accurate place to have a temp gauge, (just off the front CBV fitting is), but the use of a gauge is to find what's "normal" and react to anything that is "not normal" so if it reads 20 cooler at the pressure port than at the converter out (it will) it doesn't realy matter, just get used to what it reads wherever you install it and if it goes "squirelly" anywhere you need to investigate.

Hope this helps,

G
