Thermostat change--160* or 170*????

I have a Hypertech # 1011--160* 'stat installed for about 2,000 miles and it's been fine. Even going to work today with an outside air temp of 17*F! Now I don't run my heater--even this am -(only extra clothing was a sweater vest --I'm a tough ol' bird.

Someone(I'll let him say something if he wants to.) has been having a 'touch' of detonation and he asked me to do a couple of WOT runs today to see if I got any--we have the same chip at the moment. Outside air was at 48*F and I took my L from a 65 mph roll up to 90 mph as he asked me to. I didn't hear any discernable pinging or detonation--with my 5 lb pulley adding boost. He has a 3 lb.

If I had it to do over again, I might choose a 170* instead of the 160*F 'stat--any thoughts on this? Btw, my decimal readout shows my ECT is between 75*C-78*C(169-171*F) when fully warmed up.

I run a 170 thermostat, but only because that is what JDM supplies with his electric fan kit. I figure he must have a reason to use the 170 over the 160.

Good question. I'm currently running a 170, but would like to run a 160 because of the high temperatures out here - over 100 most of the summer. I don't think I've ever used the heater in my truck LOL

I haven't heard of any issues with the 160, but I haven't heard many definitive reasons for going to the 170 rather than the 160.

I just bought a 160 thermostat, Br7's, and some water wetter. I get a touch of detonation sometimes so I'm going to make my engine run a little cooler. I don't think that I'm going to install the thermostat until it starts warming up though. It was 18 degrees here when I woke up this morning. I cant handle being that cold. Anyone w/ the 160 having trouble with their truck not getting hot enough to warm the cab on those cold days? I had one on my 93 and it never got warm.

I thought I read that the reason was that the ecu would recieve a "cold " signal for the temp sensor , thus producing a richer condition. This affects all the electrical sensors as well. I remember even with the old 302's, that it was recommended to use the 170 thermo, as well.

At the track, it's amazing how quickly the eng cools back down with the 160--and I don't have an electric fan to help and I've never used ice on the intake either. I went to the 160 to keep detonation at bay and so far, it has. It should help even more for cooling down as the temps here heat up.

mbrown,

20 degrees this morning and no problem getting the truck warm. In fact, I had to turn the heat down before I got to work. It's a fifteen minute drive and didn't even make it halfway. I'm using the 160* stat.

Mondo1 is right. I asked JDM about using a 160 deg thermostat and he did not recommend it because he said at that temperature the PCM keeps the truck in the "cold warm-up" mode and isn't even running in closed loop mode at cruise. In this mode, it runs very rich, kind of like an electronic choke. BTW, JDM told me that his thermostats are specially made by Stant for JDM and that they are actually closer to 175 degree thermostats and not 170 degrees. My 0.02.

The stock 'stat is 180 degrees F. The 160 looks to run ~7-8 degrees C cooler than stock (what's that, ~14 degrees F?). The richened A/F (due to decreased engine temps) could be enough to stop my slight detonation.

As Dan hinted, I've got some slight detonation above 85-90mph at WOT. Since he's now got the same program, two more pounds of boost, BR7's (colder than my TR-6's) and the 160 degree stat I felt that it would make for some "empirical data". I will be ordering the stat to see if that clears the detonation I'm getting. If not, I'll swap in a set of BR7's. Ain't no way I wanna give up this program!

Ive been running the hypertech #1011 160* for about 2 weeks now, no problems. My temp. on the digital readout runs between 78-80, it has gotten up to 83 when I romp on it. I checked my wifes Expedition(5.4 also) and it always runs @ 90. I have always had detonation in the upper rpm range, so I just started adding a gallon of Toluene to a 1/2 tank of gas and no more problems!!

Skank:

I have always had detonation in the upper rpm range,

You still had detonation with the 160 installed? How come--or did I misunderstand this statement?

I ran a 12.07 with a 160 degree thermostat. I don't think it runs too rich. I'm running it in my 01 and it seems to run strong also. I wouldn't hesitate to put in a 160.
