FINALLY

Dead thread back to life with an update, question and note (or warning):

I took my truck in yesterday to have the oil changed and look for the reason behind a very small amount of oil I found on the bellhousing (I mean an extremely small light film).... I am not being to picky but if there is a leak I want it noted while the truck is under warranty, ya know.
Well I finally get a good tech, the last one scratched my rim and was like “uhhh what exhaust noise”. This one couldn't find where the oil was coming from and thought that last tech that changed the oil might not have cleaned up and that oil is the 'film' we were looking at (this could be possible because like said before the last one was a slack ***). But he started the Die test anyway so we will know on my next oil change the results of that.
While there I mentioned the ongoing exhaust noise and in a few min he told me He ordered the left side cat pipe because, inside the cat something was broken lose and rattling!!! GREAT finally I will get rid of my strange noise!! According to him, this is also the cause of the slight tick I sometimes here at part throttle on the drivers side!!
I can't say how happy this makes me. I will give a final update when the parts come in and are replaced.

Lastly I was chatting with the tech about mods and warranty. (Take note: This is at Riverside Ford in Macon Ga)
He asked what mods I was thinking about and I told him a 2# pulley and a chip. His words were, "That WILL void your warranty here! Chips are looked for and easy to see if it’s been removed and over boosting them is bad because the rods are so weak, we don’t really care about ‘other stuff’ though”. My thought in my head was ‘what other stuff?’. I Let that die and didn’t say anything else about it.

Sooooooo I guess the chip idea is out the window unless I can find another dealer or a spare computer (flashed for me).
Anyway I will not put a pulley on the truck but if I were going to there is no way they could tell it was on there because you have to remove the stock pulley to change the back belt, Right?

Sorry this post is so long, I might should have added a different thread but maybe this will stay up long enough to get some replies/ thought.

Thanks
Johnie

I wonder how Warner Robins Ford would deal with a truck with a pulley/chip...

Johnie, you and I are on similar paths with our L's it seems. I am glad you got your noise fixed finally(or at least found it) I have had no more noise problems. I just ordered the FT valve body and am also thinking about a chip/pulley combo. I can't decide what to do. Good Luck finding a new dealer that accepts mods.

Thumbs up

Warner Robins Ford works on Masterloggie's L but it's stock and runs in the 12s

Johnie, I'm glad a real mech. heard and found your 'noise'. Sorry I couldn't.

I just glad it FINALLY made the sound for someone besides me!
I was sure I would end up having to swap out everything on the truck OR seek professional help to get rid or the voices.. errr I mean sounds I was hearing.

Mark, the FT valve body is next on my list too.. your ahead of me as for you, I doubt your 'local' dealer ('sell a furd') would know the difference between stock and a 11sec L not that I would use them either but its a funny thought....
As for your choice of mods next, I road in Dan's (LIGHTNINROD) truck this past weekend.. (has a little more than you mentioned, see his sig) and WOW... His truck is fast! Didn't even feel like the same trucks (mine verse his). If you’re not worried about void or have a cool dealer then Go for it! You will love it!

Anyway have you heard if Terry has done anything to his L yet?
I am coming home this weekend and if I run across him (his shop if like 10 miles from my house) I would hate to have my as$ handed to me if he has dumped a ton of mods on the truck hehehe

I actually will be going home both this weekend (21st-23rd) and next weekend (28th-30th) and driving the L both times. 550miles one way so my baby will rack up a lot of miles but it’s so nice to drive…I just made a 1500 mile trip between the 6th and 10th of this month. I now have 5100 miles so by the end of the month I guess I will have around 7500!! That will make over 3800 miles for THIS MONTH then add in my “normal” driving and I will end up putting more miles on the truck this month than the past 5 months put together!

Sorry so long, its late and I am stuck at work,
Johnie

Unhappy Johnie:

I owe you an apology. I wasn't even thinking about my guest when I didn't offer my L for you to drive--this was after you let me drive your beauty. Forgive me for an 'alzheimer's brain fart'. Next time, you will 'mat' it! Be safe and sure on your long trips to 'tobaccy' country.

lxtc,

So your exhaust rattling problem turned out to be a cat and not a heat shield issue? I have the same problem with my 3 week old truck - when stopped and in drive you hear this thin sounding metal rattling. It seems to come and go in waves like along with the vibrations of the motor. Had your tech seen this before with the cat or did he just knock it with a hammer and listen for something to rattle inside?

Thanks.

Jim

Exhaust Noise

I have a 2002 Lightning. Mine is making the same noise you guys are describing. It has made it since I got it. Its just an off and on thing. Here is my issue though, I got a Borla Cat-Back Exhaust System about 2 months ago. It did it before and after I got this. Thats why I did not think it was the exhaust at all. You guys have a explanation for this one. I think that I definetly have the noise that you all are describing. Just not sure where its coming from!

Silver 2002,

When I first heard it I thought it sounded like a thin piece of sheet metal from a heat shield or something. Others are confirming that but lxtc also mentioned that he actually had to have his cat replaced. I am trying to make sure that's not actually the common cause before taking it in. Either way it looks like you should have the dealer check both things. You could probably even fix it yourself by prying on the metal as others have suggested. But since it is under warranty, Mr Ford can get his hands dirty...

HA! Noooooo need for an apology at all. I enjoyed the ride more than I would have a drive... to explain better... I have always been the type that worries too much to enjoy my self while driving someone else¡¦s car/truck. I always worry about someone hitting me or hurting the motor/ trans¡K
Short story:
When I was in the Navy I borrowed a friends Mazda 4x4 truck. I drove it like a baby the whole time I had it. The next morning on his was to work when he downshifted getting off I-26 (Charleston SC) his trans locked up¡K. I know it wasn¡¦t my fault but have always hated that it broke down on him the day after I drove it.

I know I am weird ƒ¼

YES it is NOT a heat sheild but that is exactly what it sounds like, or the sound it makes. The tech took a rubber hammer and hit the left side cat and you can hear 'something' inside the cat rattling.. what you explain is the exact sound I have with mine.
I heard the cat rattle when he hit it so I am pretty sure the new cat will fix the problem.... Good luck getting yours fixed!

Silver- as said before It could be your heat shields or cats. The muffler was Mark's problem but since you have changed out yours and still have the problem it has to be one of the first 2.

Good luck finding the cause and fixing your truck.
