Cool Lightning Snakebit by BLOWN Cobra R!!!

DISCLAIMER: I do not encourage or promote street racing. All events described herein were performed by professional drivers on a closed course... or something. Do not attempt at home. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if necessary.

It was Saturday night and I was just chilling with friends at the local hangout. We were near an old remote airstrip, where about 200 car enthusiasts meet every weekend to show off their rides and participate in other mischief. It was getting late (and cold), so I decided to head out with my girlfriend. Since it was close to midnight, traffic on the rural highway was very light. I see a pair of headlights fast approaching behind me and I change lanes to yield to a red Mustang with all kinds of nice goodies on it. It looked like a 2000 Cobra R, but after having seen too many Mustang GT's with faux Cobra R wings and nose splitters I assumed it was another poser. The Mustang pulled up next to me and slowed down to my pace, so I could get a closer look at the details. Very tiny SVT badge in the rear, HUGE tires, and some weird fuel tank underneath. I was *almost* convinced that this was the real deal, so I downshifted and got ready just in case. My Bassani must have sent the wrong message because he punched it and my girlfriend said "GO!" My last words were "Gee, those side exhaust pipes sure look authentic!" From a 55 MPH roll, the Cobra R absolutely destroyed me, leaving me for dead like I was parked. To add insult to injury, my girlfriend was yelling "ARE YOU GOING TO GO ALREADY? GO GO GO!" But alas, I didn't even have a chance.

We both happened to take the same exit, and at the following stoplight, we rolled down our windows and exchanged the usual pleasantries. I asked if it was a real Cobra R and he said "Yep, and it has a blower too! I had to let off at 3500 RPM back there because I'm still breaking the engine in." Gee, that makes me feel better. I gave him a thumbs up, the light turned green, and we went our separate ways.

I couldn't stop jabbering about the Cobra R all night long because I was so excited to have seen one (let alone run against one in person). I figure I was pretty lucky since there are only 300 Cobra R's in the world and I bet most of them stay on the track or in their trailer or air-conditioned garage somewhere in an underground fortress. I'm glad I got to see one up close and personal, even if I only got a good view of it's hindquarters...

I did a quick internet search for info about blown Cobra R's but didn't find much. Anyone have any idea how much power one of these might make? If you ever encounter a blonde guy in his early 30's driving a red Mustang Cobra R with Maryland tags, say hi and think twice before deciding to put the hammer down. Cuz I think he has a bigger hammer.

I think if any of us had the money, we'd have that toy too (among about 30 other toys i can think of).
I'm guessing at 385hp, add 115hp or so which would put him around 500hp?.? And i'm sure the factory claimed 385 could be shy. So in an L we'll need, what, 650hp to keep up?

I've read where they dyno around 335-340 rwhp (take that for what it's worth)....so slap a decent blower on there w/ a good tune, and that should add another 110-120 rwhp. Based on that...a rough guess would be around 450 rwhp. With his weight, he would be trapping 122-124 mph in the 1/4. He'd definitely show me his taillights in the L'....but the SS....well, that'd be a different story.

BTW...what road were you on? I'm relatively local...I'll keep an eye out for him.

I was on good ol' Rt. 66, just off of the new 234 bypass out near Manasses, VA. Come by the Burger King if you're ever in town. You'll see 300-400 people easy on a warm evening.

That's where I thought you were talking about.

I've been to that BK lots of times but I rarely bring the L. I usually head out w/ my F-body/Vette buds, so I typically take the SS.

In the past it was mostly Domestics hangin' out, but it seems that the rice have begun to infect BK as well. Is no place safe anymore?

Talking

That guy with the 2000 Cobra R has alot of money in that beast....It has a new motor, as the first one blew up with the 36lbs injectors it had....The Jennings boys own that car along with a real 93 Cobra R with a 347, t trim, DFI, etc, mid 9 second times....They also have a 94 Cobra with a 408, D3 procharger, etc and a 96 mystic with 600rwhp, so they have alot of toys to play with....LOL...

They love street racing and are always at BK on sat nights....hopefully it will be warm this sat night to head out there...haven't been there since the summer...

Since the cops have been hassling the ricers at the Expo and other hangouts, they have been going outside Fairfax County. I expect their numbers to increase.

Ebbsnflows and BlackCobra99Va, let me know next time you guys are planning on heading out there.

BlackCobra99Va, do you know how fast that 2000 Cobra L is? And how much power it's producing?

That car was at Cecil last year.I think it went 12.50 or so but with alot of mph.I think it was like 121 or something.I could be wrong.
Atleast I assume it is the same one.I don't think there are two R's with Vortech blowers. But you never know.

Hey BMWBig6. A friend of mine with a Lightning was surfing the boards and told me you had posted about our run on Saturday night. I was trying to put some miles on the motor but figured I'd give it a little gas. I bought the R with the blower on it and at the time it had just under 570 rwhp. I took the car to Cecil County in November and only got a couple of runs on it. It turns out it had a bad tune and melted the four passenger side pistions and rings plus the lower plenum intake gaskets. With really only four good pistons it ran a 12.34 @ 123mph. This was letting off by 3/4 track. I took alot of grief from the Mustang crowd about how slow the car was but they didn't know that the motor was basically trashed. I put in stock pistons with blower rings and had it balanced at a local machine shop. Saturday night was the first I had the R out since November. I need to put 500 miles on the motor before the new tune. I'm putting 50 lb. injectors with a calibrated mass air meter. She should have over 600 at the rear wheels then but I don't plan on putting her on a dragstrip again. I'll drive her to the local joints and road course her once in a while. I have a 96 Mystic Cobra that should have well over 700 rwhp to race at the dragstrip. She should be ready in April. Anyways, it was nice goofing off with you on Saturday night. I might see you this weekend at Burger King or the Capital Expo. Then it's off to Bradenton for the NMRA with our 93 Cobra R to run in the drag radial class. Take care.

Unhappy

A buddy of mine has a cobra R that's so tricked, he doesnt have a blower on it yet but he is planning on it, he just put in a $10,000 sound sytem. Its kind of a sad sight to see though, he treats the thing like Sh@t . In fact about 2 weeks ago he cracked his front splitter trying to impress some chicks flooring it out of a hollywood video parking lot.
