R9 Superchip and pining
R9 Superchip and pinging
Hey Lightning guys, I have a Superchip question. I just installed mine and I have a small amount of detonation in 2nd gear at WOT since my install. Mike Troyer said it may have been bad gas so I tried another Chevron station. It is better but it is still there. My question is that is anyone else having a slight ping at WOT? If not, what kind of gas are you using? Maybe I shouldn't be using Chevron even though Mike highly recommends it for West Coast Lightnings. I just tried a tank of Texaco and it that didn't seem to work either. He said he could reburn but at the cost of 15hp or so. I was just curious if it was winter gas, Chevron or both (neither)? Any input would be appreciated. BTW my only mods are an Airaid filter kit and the intercooler fix.

Morning Redshift
I haven't been in the Northwest since 1979, but back then in
the Portland area they sold "winter gas" which had large amounts
of methanol in it. This can definately cause detonation.
Mike is one of the better authorities on the chips, if he tells you
something it is solid.

Redshift, I had the same problem with my chip and Chevron gas. I wanted t use Chevron because I work for them but it just would not run in the L with my chip. I ran it down low and filled up with Mobil Super white gas and I changed out my thermostat to a Hypertech 160 degree got rid of the stock plugs. My detonation is gone, but I'm getting ready to install a new pulley so I'll be tweaking again to get the right combonation.
When the R9 program first came out I was running it on my 2000 and I had all kinds of pinging at the top of second and third. I went round and round with every brand of gas in the Dallas area and it did not help. I then went for the reburn and it also did not help much. Still had pinging in 2nd and 3rd. After that I gave up and went with JDM's programs and I have been very happy. In MY "opinion" based on my experience, the R9 is not a good program. Hope this helps.

Go for the reburn...
I had the same problem 'down' here in Oregon. Tried all sorts of brands of gas, and still pinging. The only thing that helped was adding some of the black-box NOS Octane Boost, and even then I still had some slight detonation.

GET
some Torco Unleaded Accelerator and your 'pings', detonation, and preignition will be a thing of the past. No, I'm not a dist.--you can buy direct or thru a local dist.--maybe........ You shouldn't need a 'full dose' just for street useage.
Look at www.torcoracefuels.com This a 'race gas' concentrate, not an octane so-called booster. Most, if not all the 'over-the-counter' stuff is almost useless--IMHO. Or, you could do as some have and add some zylene--it works too.
Important --I am not saying, "don't get a reburn of your chip". Do that but for those whose chips are 'OK', the Torco could make the difference in day-to day useage as well as on the strip where I use it.

Get a reburn or face the result of burned off plug tips. If you get lucky that is all that will happen. The worst case scenario is a piece of the plug tip will lodge in a valve and take out your motor. Don't trust octane boosters like 104. They are crap.
