My friend just bought a blue'02 and the 2nd day he had it the idler pulley on the supercharger took a dump.It sounded exactly as you described.I would put money on it that you have the same problem. It is an easy fix and should only take them a few minutes to fix at the dealer.I guess they had a bad batch of pulleys for the '02s.I haven't heard of this on older trucks.Hope this helps

is the sound louder from above or below the engine?

is is always there or does it go away after the engine warms up?

noise

I had a '00 Ranger that made the same noise at 1,000 miles... Turned out it was a defective serpentine belt and the metal cords were making the noise everytime the bare spot came around and contacted the pulley.

I have the same noise, it is going to the dearler on Monday. I was also told it may be the idler pulley. The truck still runs strong and isn't hot or anything.

Hope it's not like what happened to my 93 COBRA. Mine sounded like someone was using a weedeater on sheetmetal aluminum.

I was driving at like 40mph in 4th gear and one of my HOTSHOT Manley Valves SNAPPED in half!!

Anyway, Goodluck....Hopefully it's minor!

Does it sart making this noise as soon as you start the motor? If it starts a minute or so after you start up, it's the Intercooler Pump. Mine started screaming @ about 200 miles. You can easily check this for sure; start the motor, if the noise starts, unplug the pump. It's right behind the front bumper, very easy to get too.

The key is does it go away if you give it some gas? I have a knocking noise only at idle. The dealer says it's a combination of the belt/idler pulley for the supercharger. I have an '01 with 3k.

well well well. Guess what i found. I started ot ip again to see if i could locate the problem. As soon as i started it the sound was ALOT worse. I shut it off right away and i heard something hit the ground. (bad sign) so i get out and go look under the truck and there is a bolt sitting on the ground. Umm ya that isnt normal! so i look under the hood again i see one of the pullys siting on top of another belt. And the inside belt is totally destroyed. It pisses me off. There is no excuse for that kind of crap! If this were to happen on the highway it would of been very bad!!!! God knows what could of happened. SO now i have to wait till monday and b17ch the dealership out. i knowe it isnt there problem it is a factory problem but still i got to blow some steam off at someone!

Anyways... if u hear anything like this coming from your hood... DONT DRIVE ON IT!!!

it was a pully on the "inside track" to the left. Not really sure if there is a name for that one.

hey now

take it from me.......don't take it out on your dealer....it's not thier fault..... only will make for bad news in the future, but someone is to blame, but the chances of you finding that person who didn't torque that up are slim to none. Take a friend with you on the way to the dealer and **** and moan to him all the way there, thay way you'll feel better. I know it sucks man....but you have the future to look forward too, let warrenty take care of the bugs.....
