I need to buy some new tires and need some that will last a good 12k to 15k miles. My old ones are Goodyear F-1 295x45x18.
I was wondering if there is another type of tire that someone sells that may come in a 305x45x18. If so, would it be better to get that tire in a 305x40x18 because of the larger profile in heighth due to the width. (Still with me?)
What are my options?
Also, what is the best price I can get and where?

 

If I go back with 295/45/18s I like the BFG Comp T/A ZRs. They look good, last good, perform well, and they sport the best side walls in the tire world bar none. 305/55s if I go Nitto. Just my choices.

 

Which Nittos are you talking about, Odin? The 555Rs come in 305/45/18 (I have them on my truck) but you sure as hell aren't going to get 12K miles out of those gumballs, and they don't work worth a s**t in wet weather. The 555s, by all accounts a great all-around performance tire, do not come in 305, just 295/45/18 like our F1s. Grimlock might get more milage out of the Nitto 404s, which come in 285/50/18, but they are not a high performance tire. You pays your money and you takes yer cherce.

The reason I am considering the 305's is because I think I may get better traction over the stock tire. However, now I come to find out that there are a lot of other tires to choose from. What is the difference between a tire that has a rating of 180 like the TA's and the nitto's that have a 300 rating?
Also, do you think the 305 will help me hook up any better than the stock tires on the street?
Do wider tires affect hydroplaning?

Bigger is not always better! The compound is the Key. If you dont want F1's and you want a street radial tire I would go with the BF T/A ZR's or the Nitto 555's. Believe it or not the F1's are a REALLY good tire. I have heard they are even coming out in 22's now. I hope they do, ill get them!!!

The toyo's are sweet, and will last alittle longer than the F1's, but they are only V rated for speed, not as extreme as the goodyears. I love the F1's, and will probably stick with them at the price we can get them for.

Those are discount tire prices. Hopefully I can get a deal.

The Nitto 404 IS a high performance tire (truck performance)....

No, it's not a drag radial, but the traction is better than the f1's.

I've had these on my truck for nearly 40,000 miles! Also keep in mind that I use these drag racing also... probably a hundred or more passes. I'm no professional driver, lots of 2.0's for 60 footers on th ef1's, but LOTS of 1.9's and 1.8's with the 404's.

I'd bet the 555's are even stickier, no doubt actually... but you WILL NOT get the same mileage out of them, and I doubt you'd get 20,000 miles.

Hydroplaning? HA! Theses tires are AWESOME wet weather tires!

When you get down to a thread depth that is questionable on the safety side YOU WILL KNOW it... The traction drops off radically....

 

Here is a picture of the 404's. They are not for everyone because they have a lot of side wall. Being old, I grew up liking sidewall on trucks. It certianly makes those 18 in. rims look small.

I find they hook better than the F1's and I loved my F1's. The street seems to like the Nitto's better. I have not taken them to the track yet, but I know they can't do any better than the 1.86 I got on my F1's.
